The Greetings received from International President Mr. Tim Boyd and other Dignitaries & Federations were read out by Secretary Sis. Mahazaver Dalal. TOS Tanzania Director Sis. Deepa Kapoor conveyed the greetings of Dar-es-Salaam Lodge, Africa in person.

Chief Guest Dr. Deepa Padhi in her Inaugural Address speaking on ‘Self Transformation through Wisdom, Compassion and Contemplation’ said: One absolute Consciousness – the One Reality with its breath has become subject to time & space, i.e. Purusha & Prakruti. Everything is in One Consciousness and Individual Consciousness is a mean to reach the highest consciousness - realization of Oneness of Life. Universal Brotherhood springs with understanding of Wisdom and highly developed emotions of Compassion. Compassion is Law of Laws – Love Eternal. It is beyond separateness and selfishness. One should treat every form of life, even flora & fauna and animals also with compassion. Contemplation is a continued attention of mind to one subject with commitment. It should be an uninterrupted flow of mind to perceive One Reality. It starts as a practice leading to experiences and terminating with union with God. Today human society needs Practical Theosophy to unite fragmented consciousness into One Consciousness.

Dr. Rajam Pillai, Member of Blavatsky Lodge as Editor & Publisher of magazine ‘Synergy’ requested Dr. Deepa Padhi to release July-December 2018 Issue focussed on ‘Theosophy on Art’ authored by Bro. Arni Narendran.

Sis. Manjula Kanabar was felicitated by Chief Guest for her five decades of dedication to Theosophy & TS highlighted by Blavatsky Lodge President Sis. Kashmira Khambatta.

Sis. Aban Patel conducted the Prize Distribution for Dani Elocution Competition 2018, held jointly by Bombay TF and Junior Red Cross Maharashtra. First Prize Winners of Senior & Junior Groups impressed everyone with their delivery of Poems on ‘Trees’ and ‘Cell Phone’. The Chief Guest presented Prizes and Merit Certificates to all Winners.

Saturday 27th October 2018 evening

At Blavatsky Lodge TS

The Session was opened with the Universal Prayer and welcome by BTF President Bro. Vinayak Pandya. TOS Mumbai Region President Sis. Parinaz Gandhi introduced the Chief Guest Dr. Deepa Padhi, International Vice-President & President TOS Odisha.

Dr. Deepa Padhi speaking on ‘The First Step: Generous Altruism’ said: World’s largest Trees of Red Wood near San Francisco are hundred or even thousands of years old. Their roots are not deep, but the secret is that roots of each tree reach out seeking roots of other trees, get intertwined and making a united bond to support each other withstand  all hazards. Red Wood Trees teach humanity that the strength lies in unity and willingness to help & support others. Madam HP Blavatsky‘s declaration is that ‘True Theosophy is Altruism. It is the Great Renunciation of self unconditionally and absolutely, in thought as well as in action’. In an article of American Health journal of 1988 it is stated that altruism is in one’s own best interest. Helping others inspires gratitude and affection in them and this reduces stress. All Religions & Theosophy speak of Altruism. With altruism one feels joy with the joyful and sorrow with the sorrowful. This is the stage when his self is united with every other as stated in Mahavakya ‘Soham’ ‘I am that, I am the whole’.

Maitreya Round Table performed ‘Ceremony of Light’ with Mrs. Dawlat Dhalla on Piano. The ceremony inspired all to seek the Light of Truth, Love and Strength through Knowledge, Love and Service of Fellow men. Past Leading Knight Thrity Dalal explained the purpose of International Order of Round Table. It was heartening to see the little Pages performing their duty with diligence. Sis. Navaz Dhalla gave the Vote of Thanks.

Sunday 28th October 2018 Full Day

At Juhu Theosophical Colony

Brethren of North & South Bombay gathered in the beautiful Theosophical Garden Society at Juhu for a Full Day Session. Dombivili Lodge Representatives Sis. Archana Joshi, Bro. Pradeep Joshi and Mrs. Anupma Rackvi had also joined. The Session was opened with the inspiring Bharat Samaj Pooja conducted by Bro. Navin Kumar and Bro. Navin Patel.

BTF President Bro. Vinayak Pandya welcomed all and introduced the Chief Guest Dr. Deepa Padhi. Bro. Umang Mehta, Chairman of Vasanta Theosophical Co-operative Housing Society said that they were very happy to host the BTF Annual Session and to have Brethren in their Theosophical Housing Society.

Sis. Farida Lallan & Sis. Zarine Edekar of Ananda Lodge and Bro. Arni Narendran of Blavatsky Lodge were felicitated for their dedication to Theosophy and commitment to TS over 40 years by the Chief Guest with a Memento & a Certificate.

Dr. Deepa Padhi in her address guided & inspired Brethren for ‘Theosophy in Our Everyday Life: There’s a tendency in human mind to be content with theoretical understanding of spiritual truth and not to proceed further by acting according to that understanding. The reason is it calls for strong determination, perseverance, courage and personal sacrifice and to move out of comfort zone. Day to day actions in our life are manifestations of our inner nature & inner self. It gets reflected in one’s posture, tone of voice, relationship with family members, with subordinates & with Boss at workplaces and how one relates with the surroundings like nature, animals, plants, and insects. One need to realize that there is only One source – One Consciousness and all beings & things are knitted in to interrelatedness and interdependence. Theosophy encourages simple living as that helps individual in getting more time to be with the inner self. Buddha has said “do not cling to life and wealth & power. Live a life of truth then surely joy, peace and bliss will dwell in mind.”

The morning session was followed by the 87th Annual General Meeting of BTF attended by 46 Brethren to fondly remember departed Brethren, conduct the Business, and welcome BTF Council Officers & Members for Term 2018-2020, to pass Resolutions for the Leaders & Devoted Members and to express Thanks.

There was a Book Depot Counter by Blavatsky Lodge Book Depot attended by Book Depot Manager Sis. Freny Paghdiwala and Sis. Navaz Dhalla.

The Welcome Breakfast & Lunch were time to refresh & strengthen bonds of Brotherhood.

Afternoon Session was chaired by Bro. Navin Kumar. He presented Diplomas to Four Youth of Juhu Theosophical Colony and One Senior Member of Blavatsky Lodge.

The Symposium on the 87th Annual Session Theme ‘Consciousness, Compassion, Contemplation’ had many spontaneous speakers.

Youth Speakers:

Bro. Pratham Mehta raised questions about how to control waking & sleeping consciousness and to realize how good is a subconscious mind? Working for NGOs has given him opportunity to help people. Bro. Navin Kumar advised that Mind has to be under control for actions.

Bro. Poojan Mehta said power of compassion is to work tirelessly for suffering people and creatures. For compassion concern and understanding of pain & suffering are needed.

Senior Speakers:

Sis. Thrity Dalal said Consciousness, Compassion and Contemplation are three points of a Triangle. As Annie Besant has said ‘One powerful thought is capable of reaching 50% of Universe.’ Beautiful thoughts have positive effect in the world. Healing Groups reach out to sick & weak. It was a shock when Taxi-man had told her, ‘Madam, you have sat in my Taxi, otherwise I was about to go to commit suicide.’ But talking to him and guiding him through the drive, it was a relief to hear when she got down, ‘Madam, I will never think of suicide again.’ In second incidence she had seen a bagger cleaning dirt from a public road with his dirty shirt, which conveyed whatever he had, with that he wanted to help passersby.

Bro. Bhavesh Pandya speaking in Hindi questioned about ‘Chetna’ (consciousness0, ‘Karuna’ (compassion0 and ‘Chintan’ (contemplation). Chetna is Energy, but is not it thanks to surrounding Chetna? Should Karuna be only for helpless people or it should be even for us? String of thoughts start as soon as one gets up, is Chintan essential for such thoughts? Bro. Navin Kumar advised that Chintan on good thoughts will have beneficial effect. To forget oneself and be one with Chintan, will be Meditation.

Bro. Taral Munshi speaking in Hindi said ‘achchhai karneka zanoon hona chahiye’ There should be the spirit of Service. He was touched when he gave some food to a poor urchin on a railway station, instead of eating himself, he went to a group of poor children and gave them what he got.

Dombivili Lodge Representatives:

Sis. Archana Joshi said that Individual Consciousness expanding to Social Consciousness should unite with Divine Consciousness. One needs to train oneself for perfect balance of all three consciousness’s.

Sis. Anupma Rackvi said Compassion is a very high state of human consciousness. As a human being one needs to understand, think & act out of compassion. Bro. Navin Kumar added that there are ‘Law of Duty and Law of Sacrifice’.

Member of Public:

Shri Apurva Parekh, an Advocate Activist, said Gandhiji’s Bhajan ‘Vaishnav Jan to Tene re Kahiye’ , Mother Teresa and even Friday Shows of Kaun Banega Karorpati portraying selfless visionaries show the path. We should ask, what we can do for our country.

Bro. Navin Kumar from the Chair summed up the symposium with recitation of inspiring Shlokas and Sanskrit Prayer.

Finale was a Bharat Natyam programme by Ace Dancer Namita Bodaji and her senior students Sandhya Sukesh Bolar and Anita Menon giving dances of Pushpanjali, Ranjani and Padam with Hindi & Bengali songs. They touched on sensitivity, different moods, joy & mother’s love

The Three Day Session ended with a song by Bro.Pradeep Joshi of Dombivili Lodge.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

“This choice between the path of darkness and the path of  light, between that which takes you headlong into bondage and that which bestows eternal release, this choice between entering ‘into the sources of widespread death’ and soaring into the region of Eternal Existence, presents itself before all human beings. The wise and the discriminative, with their spirit awakened, take to the path of light and glory. While the rest choose the downward way, which takes them round and round the whirling wheel of birth and death”.

SWAMI SIVANANDA

THE FIRST STEP: GENEROUS ALTRUISM

by Dr. Deepa Padhi, International Vice-President

Talk on 27th October 2018 at BTF 87th Annual Session

Generally, trees are known for their altruistic nature. There is a red wood forest near San Fransisco. These red wood trees are the largest trees on this planet. Some of them are hundreds and even thousands of years old. But their roots do not grow deep. These trees have been standing there for centuries enduring massive wind storms, earthquakes and blizzards. The secret is – the root of each tree under the ground reach out seeking the roots of other red wood trees and when they meet they intertwine making a permanent bond with each other. In this way all the redwood trees in the entire forest are directly or indirectly giving support to each other. Unity is their strength. This redwood forest gives humanity a very profound lesson that the real strength lies in our unity, in our own willingness to help and support others.

Madam Blavatsky makes the declaration that `True Theosophy is Altruism. It is the Great Renunciation of Self, unconditionally and absolutely, in thought as well as in action.’ Altruism is the opposite of `Selfishness’. It is the principle or practice of selfless concern and service for others. The word was coined by the French philosopher August Comte in French, as ‘Altruisme’. He derived it from the Latin word `Alteri’ meaning other people.

The term altruism refers to an ethical doctrine which says that individuals are morally obliged to benefit others. Altruistic behavior is rooted in empathy, in the ability to put oneself in another’s position and identify with his or her situation.

Though it is generally believed that human beings are fundamentally selfish (egoistic), psychologists say that every human being has two instincts – altruistic and egoistic, in varying degrees. Recent neurological researchers reveal that ‘people’s first impulse is to co-operate rather than compete.’ Altruism is based in the act to promote someone else’s welfare even at the cost of one’s own.

Altruistic actions can be compared with supererogative actions of the Western moral philosophy which are considered as morally praiseworthy but not morally required. Some philosophers say that as these actions are morally permissible, therefore, has moral worth. There are many examples of such actions. In 2007, the Virginia Tech Prof. Liviu Librescu blocked the door to his class room so that his 32 students and faculty members could escape the bullets of Seuing Hui Cho, who was on a rampage to kill indiscriminately. In so doing, Mr Librescu gave up his life. Many such instances are there which are regarded as supererogative actions. But these actions are situation-specific, that is, such actions take place as and when a particular situation arises and the performance of such actions could relate to those specific requirements. He becomes a hero for the single action he performs in a supererogatory way. But altruistic actions  are always selfless and meant for the good of others .They are not restricted to human kingdom only but are intended for all sentient and insentient beings.

Effective altruism is a movement advocated by the philosopher Peter Singer who rejects the view that some lives are intrinsically more valuable than others. He writes in his Essay ‘Famine, Afluence and Morality’--  It makes no differences whether the person I can help is a neighbor’s child ten yards away from me or a Bengali whose name I shall never know, ten thousand miles away…….The moral point of view requires us to look beyond the interests of our own society……From the moral point of view the prevention of the starvation of millions of people outside our society must be considered at least as pressing as the upholding of property norms within our society.’

An article from the journal ‘American Health’ (March 1988) points out that altruism is, in fact in one’s own best interest. Helping others inspires gratitude and affection in them and this reduces stress. It is claimed that a helpful attitude may even benefit the immunological system which is closely linked to the brain and mind.

Evolutionary scientists maintain that altruism has deep roots in human nature because helping and co-operation promotes the survival of our species. According to them, compassion, co-operation, and community are key to our survival. As Darwin says, altruism (which he calls sympathy or benevolence) is an `essential part of the social instincts,’ and this is supported by neurologists who say that when people act altruistically, their brains activate in regions that signal `pleasure’. In fact, this pleasure can be said to be the true inner happiness or blissful joy(ananda) that lies in serving or giving others something without expecting anything in return.

But in one sense giving is receiving. When we give or serve others we increase our sense of connection and feeling of oneness with all beings and things. So the seers say: Jagathitayaatmanahmoksyarthayacha.

Mrs. Hillary Clinton, wife of the Former President of USA, Mr.Bill Clinton, observed that ‘we, human beings suffer from a sleeping sickness of the soul’….`that we lack at some core level meaning in our individual lives…… that our lives are connected to one another’ and added, `Let us be willing to remould society by redefining what it means to be a human being.’

Within each individual human mind, there lies tremendous power. The booklet, `At The Feet Of The Master’, urges us to use our positive thought power everyday for good and noble purposes such as to think daily of someone whom we know to be in distress or suffering and to pour out our loving, compassionate thoughts upon that person.

The transformation of selfishness to selflessness is truly the transformation of one’s limited self having limited sense  of awareness into the Higher Self or Universal Self (Infinite awareness). In this process of transformation our circumference of love gradually increases to encompass the whole cosmic community.

Altruism is the basis of Theosophy. As HPB says – ‘Self-knowledge or Atma Vidya is the only kind of altruism that any Theosophists ……who would be wise and unselfish ought to strive after. She writes – Altruism is an integral part of self-development………Altruism is a textural change in the quality of the mind more than specific action of any particular kind. When there is the right state within, right action takes place automatically.’

Dr. Radha Burnier writes in her article ‘Altruism’- ‘Many of us declare ourselves to be Theosophists but we are only members of the Theosophical Society, not real Theosophists. The Theosophist is one who is different because he is characterized by this quality of altruism.’

Those who are sincere spiritual aspirants need to practice this fundamental virtue of selflessness in their day to day life. G. S. Arundale had said -`Less a person thinks about himself, the more he is really paying attention to his spiritual growth. Each little act of service returns to the doer in the shape of an added power to serve.’

It is known that the Theosophical Society was closer to the Masters in the beginning when it started and many times members were instructed and guided through letters. Today, there is no guidance or intervention by the Masters. The reason is implicit in the words of HPB when she says -``It is impossible to employ spiritual forces if there is the slightest tinge of selfishness (or separateness) remaining in the operator.’

In The Light on the Path, it is beautifully written -`Desire to sow no seed for your own harvesting: desire only to sow that seed the fruit of which shall feed the world. You are a part of the world, in giving it food, you feed yourself.’

All major religions are based on this key concept of altruism which is often described as the Golden Rule of Ethics.

In Jainism, the first Tirthanker Rishav introduced the concept of altruism not only for humans but for all sentient beings.

In Islam, the concept `ithar’(altruism) is the notion of preferring others to oneself’. Sufis believe that concern for others is rooted to be a demand on the human body.

Altruism figures prominently in Buddhism which has for its fundamental principles, compassion, tolerance and non-violence.

Altruism is essential to the Sikh religion. The Guru Arjun Dev sacrificed his life for the greatest gift to mankind, the Guru Granth. Guru Govind Singh (the tenth Guru) was in war with Mogul rulers to protect the people of different faiths.

Altruism is fundamental to the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel. St. Thomsas Aquinas says - `you should love your neighbor as yourself’ which means that love for our self is   exemplar of love for others.

In Hinduism, as it is mentioned in Gita, one can attain perfection by working selflessly for the benefit of the society, that is, `Lokasangraha’ as well as for the benefit of all sentient (sarvabhutahiteratah). Lord Krishna has elevated the idea of altruism to the highest form of spiritual service referred to as Karma Yoga by which one can attain the Ultimate Goal – self-realization.

Swami Vivekananda said –‘Work done for others awakens the subtle and dormant divine power, Kundalini within our body.’

Having risen to that great height where all selves are known as one, the spiritual speaker sees all  forms in himself and himself in every form as it is mentioned in Ishavasya Upanishad ‘Yastusarvanibhutaniatmanyevaanupasyatisarvabhutesuchatmanam.’  He feels joy with the joyful and feels sorrow with the sorrowful. This is the stage when he comes to know   his self as united with every other, hence the Mahavakya – Soham (I am that, I am the whole)

Theosophy or self-knowledge and altruism or selfless service are complementary to each other they are the two sides of a coin. Self-realization is indeed a journey from selfishness to  selflessness, exclusiveness to inclusiveness, diversity to unity.

I would like to end my speech with the sayings of St Francis –

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

      To be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand

      To be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive,

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and

It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
