By the hands of Prof. C. A. Shinde, Theosophical
Books were presented to Sis. Dr. Rajam Pillai, Publisher & Editor of
‘Synergy’ for Non-TS Writer Students & Teachers of April-June 2019 Issue of
‘Synergy’. Dr. Rajam Pillai presented her Hindi Books on Maharashtra and
Saints of India to Prof. C. A. Shinde.
Prof. C. A. Shinde started
TS Workers’ Training Camp with the explanation of TS Invocation ‘O! Hidden
Life’. It shows the way to perfection from Mineral Kingdom to Human Kingdom
to spread Universal Brotherhood. Theosophy is Perfection and religion of
Responsibility. Theosophy is Goodness and with Science of Philosophy
relates to other Religions and
Vibrations.
With
a chart he explained Personality (Human
side) & Ego (Divine side) and Antahkarana, the Bridge between
Personality and Ego (Soul), which helps a purified Mind & Heart to aspire
for diviner counterpart.
What is needed to be a TS
Worker? (an interactive session guided by Prof Shinde):*Generosity *Courage *Energy *Study leading to enlightenment
*Service & Sacrifice *Determination & strong will to serve Humanity to
help in the process of evolution *To understand oneself *Compassion
*Sensitivity to understand others *Manavta
- to cultivate humane values to
serve humanity
First
one has to become a nucleus of humanitarian values *To work without distinctive attitude to
strengthen the large nucleus *To listen to other Religions with open mind &
open heart and respect and not to argue (this is the reason there are prayers
of all religions) *To avoid dogmas *To understand that all Life is One and
inter related on the long journey of Evolution * To summarize, Prof.
Shinde quoted last words of Col H.S.Olcott, “In memory of me continue to work
for Brotherhood of Religion. There is no religion higher than Truth for
perfection of humanity.”
Speaking about TS Mission
Statement Prof. Shinde explained that TS Mission is
the way to work for Three Objects of TS.
He
added that Guru is needed to guide
humanity to work for the Divine Plan of Evolution, which is Biological,
Intellectual and Spiritual evolution of humanity. An aspirant needs Will
for physical effort and Intelligence to pursue what is right
and courage to discard what is false. Ego-Soul has to be nurtured with
Eternal Love. Meditation should be on Eternal Will, Eternal Intelligence and Eternal
Love.
With
a chart he linked simple words to
Theosophical Terms - Spirit is Monad, Soul is Body of Spirit which is reincarnating
& undying and Body is Personality.
Prof. Shinde with handouts
spoke on The Three Great Truths. The Teachings of
Pythagoras which conform with Theosophy, The Lesser & Greater Mysteries,
The nature or Constitution of Man, Fundamentals of Theosophy, Adyar – as JK
said a spiritual oasis, and Days of Remembrance.
Before Lunch Break, Prof.
C.A. Shinde for study gave handouts on
International Presidents Shri N. Sri Ram, Mr. John B. S. Coats and Smt Radha
Burnier to Three Group Leaders.
Post
Lunch was the workshop on ‘Know Your
International Presidents’. The purpose was to learn about life, work, books
and greatness of recent International Presidents with group study and sharing
of personal experiences if any. This study was in view of the fact that though
most of current members had a chance to see & listen to Radhaji, but very
few had similar opportunity for N. Sri Ram and John Coats. Dombivali Lodge group studied about Smt Radha Burnier. Blavatsky Lodge
group studied about N. Sri Ram and Group of Other Lodges of BTF studied about
Mr. John B. S. Coats. During the Group Study members learnt more about N.
Sri Ram & John Coats and got more information about Radhaji. The Group
Study was followed by presentations by Group Leaders.
5th International
President N. Sri Ram: Blavatsky Lodge Group Leader Sis. Meherangiz Baria briefly spoke
about his life dedicated
to
Theosophy, his services as Secretary to TS International Presidents, starting
of ‘Watch Tower’, fighting for freedom of employment, standing for Right and
giving in for trivial matters and listening to others. His Aura used to bring
out finer values in visitors. Sis. Baria ended with couple of quotes of N. Sri
Ram.
Bro. Navin Kumar shared his personal experience of meeting N. Sri Ram in 1972, when
he had found N. Sri Ram to be a silent man with few precise words.
6th International
President John B. S. Coats: It was a special
privilege for Sis. Thrity Dalal,
Leader of Group for Other Lodges, to share her personal experiences. It was the
Centenary Celebration of TS in Juhu Theosophical Colony, when she as a school
girl was lucky to garland John Coats. She was introduced as a future TS member,
but John Coats had said she is already a TS member. He inspired youth. He had
passed away on 26th December 1979, the opening day of TS Convention at Adyar.
Bro. Arni Narendran also shared his personal experience of working as Manager of
International Youth Centre started by Jhon Coats, who believed that youth
activity would attract youth to Theosophy.
7th International
President Radha Burnier: Dombivali Lodge Group
leader Sis.Nita, speaking about
Radhaji’s life dedicated to Theosophy and Theosophical Society, said that she
was an International President born in Adyar. Bro. Jitendra Thakur sharing personal experience said that
Radhaji’s speech and her simplicity & goodness turned me to Theosophy. Bro. Vinayak Pandya quoted Rukminidevi
Arundale, ‘Members wanted me to be the
International President, but Masters wanted Radha to be the International
President’. Bro. Vinayak added that TS Workers are ambassadors of TS so
they should be mindful of their words, actions and activities.
Prof. Shinde shared his personal experiences also.
In the end guidelines of
Prof. C. A. Shinde were: *As AB said, you
will
face difficulty in life but do not leave Theosophy *Impulse must come from
within *Choose the work and do your best *Not to remain idle *Do not say ‘No’
for taking up any work *The prayer should be, ‘Make me an instrument My Lord’
*Share Theosophy *Worker is on the path of spiritual progress so Thought
control important. Bhakti Yoga gives
goodness to thoughts, Jhan Yoga gives
quality to Thought and Karma Yoga
orients Thoughtful beneficent Action * Be open to new ideas, but do not discard
old ideas *Keep body healthy and have noble ideas *TS is a path to become Honest
(Satyam), Divine (Shivam), & Beautiful (Sundaram), but the effort is
needed.
The day ended with a Vote
of Thanks by BTF Secretary Sis. Mahazaver Dalal and
recitation of the Sanskrit Prayer.
PROF. C. A. SHINDE’S TALKS
ON ‘LIGHT ON THE PATH’ FOR BTF BRETHEREN on Monday 24th June and Tuesday 25th
June 2019 in Green Room of Blavatsky Lodge:
One
of the Three TS Gems - ‘Light on the Path’ by Mable Collins, which leads to
Adeptship, is difficult to study and understand. Prof. Shinde with his lucid
explanations and charts covering the book at a glance in two evening sessions
inspired Brethren of Bombay to study the book. A chart on the book summarized: *Four Rules for ability of true
Sight, Hearing, Speech and Standing *21 Rules of Part I covered What to Kill
Out, What to Desire and What to Seek *To Seek are needed study of the Laws of being, the laws of
Nature and the Laws of Super-Natural *21 Rules of Part II covered metaphors of
Warrior & Music, rules to look around and within, instructions to inquire
about Secrets and to respond to those secrets and comments dictated by Masters.
With other charts on ‘Spectrum of
Consciousness’, ‘All is Within’, ‘The Total Constitution of Man’ ‘Evolution of
Consciousness’ and ‘Growth of The Soul by Guna & Karma’ he explained unfoldment of Consciousness.
Prof.
Shinde gave home-work to study Essay on
‘Karma’. At Tuesday Session, motivating Brethren to share what they gathered
from the Essay, he urged to contemplate
on the passage: “Therefore be warned,
you who are but turning towards the life of occultism. Learn now that there is
no cure for desire, no cure for the love of reward, no cure for the misery of
longing, save in the fixing of sight and hearing upon that which is invisible
and soundless.” Prof. Shinde added that let there be longing to be one with
the Light. It will be an inner journey. Keep quiet. Do not judge. Understand
your nature not to reject it, but to complete it with goodness, e.g. to convert
Lust in to Love, to convert Anger in to Compassion. Then only Flower of Life
blooms.
Three day Study Camp ended
with profuse thanks by BTF President Bro. Vinayak
Pandya to Prof. C. A. Shinde and recitation of the Sanskrit Prayer.
Prof. Shinde on 26th June
2019 addressed Vasanta- Ganesh–Jyoti Lodge Brethren at Sis. Padmaben Mehta’s
residence.

MEMORIES OF INTL GENERAL
COUNCIL MEETING
FOR STRATAGIC PLANNING
AT INTERNATIONAL
THEOSOPHICAL CENTER
AT NAARDEN IN NETHERLANDS
FROM 27 JUNE TO 02 JULY
2019
BY
BRO. VINAYAK PANDYA
BTF President & Member
of International General Council
Ever
since Mr. Tim Boyd has taken over responsibilities of International
Presidentship of Theosophical Society (TS), he has been making every attempt to
resurgent TS. As part of this it has been decided to have General Council (GC)
meetings twice in a year outside Adyar. TS has wonderful centers at many
places. One of this is International
Theosophical Centre (ITC) at Naarden in Netherlands. This centre is on 15
acres of lush green forest land. It is a wonderful centre with Besant Hall,
Crystal House, Crystal Hall, Arundale House, Michal House, Garden of
Remembrance, Catholic Church, Cottages, Round Table and other facilities. GC
meeting was held here for Strategic Planning of TS.
Many
GC members along with invitees were present at the Meeting. Participants were
expected to arrive on 27 June and leave on 02 July 2019. This year, every
morning there was Meditation for half an hour before breakfast.
Mr.Tim Boyd presided over
the meetings. President welcomed every one and
Meetings began with silence & invoking Masters to guide the TS. The purpose
of the meetings was to critically evaluate what we have been doing? What is to
be done? How to make TS more effective in future? Mr. Tim Boyd reviewed what
has been going on in TS work and what changes are needed. He also gave overview
of 40 projects members should think over. He had added, ‘we are not in a hurry
but we have to take call on one or other a day’.
Introductory Book on
Theosophy:-
Brother Arend, President
of ITC & senior theosophist from Netherlands presented
paper on introductory books on Theosophy. It was discussed that for a beginner
or sympathizer some material should be published in easy understandable
language. Any contradictory view should be avoided, as sometimes there are
different views. It was pointed out that TS has literature of Madam Blavatsky,
Dr Besant & Leadbeater era. It was proposed that based on this literature
to write 3 books for Introduction to Theosophy.
Theosophical Publishing
House:-
Mr.Arend lead the discussion on Theosophical Publishing House (TPH). TPH role
was discussed in details. There is a change in people’s reading habits. Day by
day people prefer to read e-books. E-books are cheaper for publishing, though.
it has inherent threat of copy. It does not involve inventory cost, space and
dead investments. There are E-stores like Amazon who sell e-books. TS should
take advantage of the same. There should be broader coordination between
publishing activities in same language. There may be slow moving books, which
may not be commercially viable but important for spiritual seekers They should
be published by TPH, may be as e-book. Ponder upon new ideas and apply our
minds jointly. There was no hurry in deciding any matters. It was discussed
that some time Indians find TPH books costly. Brother Pradeep Gohil informed
that many of TPH books are out of copyrights period so same books produced by
Indian Section are sold at substantially low price. In view of this serious
actions should be taken by TPH.
Damodar Gardens:-
President Mr.Tim Boyd informed the
members that Krishnamurty Foundation of India (KFI) have vacated the Damodar
Gardens (DG) on 30 May 2018. Now it is with TS to utilize and protect the same.
Heavy security expenses have to be incurred as there are chances of
unauthorised persons getting into DG. TS had received an offer from TVS
Education Society (TVSES) to start international school at the said premises.
TVSES are offering Rs.8 lakh License Fees per month with increase of 5% after
every 7 years. TVSES wanted this for 40 years with further extension of 20
years. It was decided in last meeting at Naarden that this offer is too low. In
view of this a Professional Firm was hired to give expected evaluation of rent
receivable. After that with oral publicity offers were invited. 15 parties have
shown interest in long lease of 33 years. Among them Choradia Group had
originally given offer of Rent Rs.10 million per month. It seems good &
President was authorized to do the needful at the earliest.
Members were informed that Adyar Theosophical Academy has started
with 22 students for standards KG to Grade 2.
Theosophical Schools:-
Mr Vicente Hao Chin, Jr (Vic) of Philippines presented paper on need for Theosophical Schools. Education has been
considered as one of the most important work directions of the Theosophical
Society since the time of H. P. Blavatsky and H. S. Olcott. In ‘The Key to Theosophy’ Madam
H. P. Blavatsky wrote:
If we had money, we would
found schools which would turn out something else than reading and writing
candidates for starvation. Children should above all be taught self-reliance,
love for all men, altruism, mutual charity and more than anything else, to think
and reason for themselves. We would reduce the purely mechanical work of the
memory to an absolute minimum and devote the time to the development and
training of the inner senses, faculties and latent capacities. We would
endeavor to deal with each child as a unit, and to educate it so as to produce
the most harmonious and equal unfoldment of its powers, in order that its
special aptitudes should find their full natural development. We should aim at
creating free men and women, free intellectually, free morally, unprejudiced in
all respects, and above all things, unselfish. And we believe that much if not
all of this could be obtained by proper and truly theosophical education. (Key,
Sect. 13)
Olcott, on the other hand, established more than 200 Buddhist
schools in Sri Lanka in order to counteract the
attempt of Christian schools to dominate the culture of the country. He
eventually turned all these schools to the government of Sri Lanka. As a
result, Sri Lanka has retained its Buddhist culture and Olcott is considered by
the country as a National Hero.
Annie Besant established or inspired the establishment of
Theosophical Schools not only in India but in many other countries in the
world: England, Scotland, United States, Australia,
New Zealand and China.
But by the 1970s, only one school was left that was being run by the
Theosophical Society. This was the Olcott Memorial School, which was a charity school and did not have the core components of a
theosophical school. Six schools under the Besant
Educational Fellowship in India are being run autonomously and are not
under the TS in India. The Theosophical Order of Service in India has
established or supported several charity schools, but do not have a clear
theosophical philosophy in the way they are run.
In about 1986, the Philippine section started its first kindergarten
school at its national headquarters. Later, it
started two other schools, the second of which became Golden Link College
because in addition to kindergarten, primary and secondary classes, it started a college in 2009 for teacher
education and other courses. Today, there are four schools directly under Golden Link College (GLC), and two
schools that are affiliated with GLC also follow the GLC curriculum and
philosophy.
VHC emphasised that it is extremely difficult to
put theosophical ideas in person after certain age. It is easier if children
are given TS ideology at their tender age. GLC has training facilities
for teachers. Teachers have to be trained first that they can follow & teach
to students. Students should be inculcated with ideas of brotherhood, compassion,
self-development, no-competition, human values, truth, trust, consciousness
about duties, awareness, avoid discrimination. VHC says we should have
target of 100 schools in next 50 years. It was discussed that
educating parents is done in Theosophical School.
It was informed that Indian Section
has taken control of 3 Education institutions at Varanasi.
Meditation Cources:-
VHC described various meditation methods. It was exhaustively discussed that TS should recommend &
practice meditation. At present it is left to members to follow whichever
meditation they want to do. It was decided to find out what has been followed
in various TS centres.
Self Transformation Coerces:-
Mr. Vic explained that
self-transformation courses help a lot to participants. More members should be
trained to conduct self-transformation courses.
Theosophy World:-
Mr John from New Zealand explained
‘Theosophy World’ site. An exhaustive work is done for ‘Theosophy World’. Most
of the TS literature is available on this site. Members / anyone can visit this site & get knowledge on TS. It
was discussed how to utilize fully the efforts made in New Zealand for TS at
large.
Theosophical Centres around the world:-
Mr.Arend presented ideas on TS Centres
around the world. It was decided to make TS Centres more sustainable and
effective for the work of TS. It was
discussed how to generate more revenues for TS properties around the world. Indian
Section has properties at Varanasi & Bhuwali. Indian section encouraged
federations & other sections to conduct study camp at beautiful Himalayan Study Centre, Bhuwali. Bhuwali
can accommodate 50 persons. Varanasi can accommodate 125 persons.
International Speakers (IS) List:-
International Speakers List was
circulated amongst members. It contained two
speakers from India Brother Shikhar Agnihotri
and Prof. C. A. Shinde. It was
decided that Section inviting speaker will bear the cost.
Objects of TS:-
Marcos presented paper on making changes in the objects of
TS. Brotherhood does not include woman.
In English speaking countries people object to this. Nowadays third category is
also there. It was decided that members
will sleep over the ideas & in
future it will be deliberated.
TS Youth Exchange Program :-
Mr. Pradeep Gohil presented paper on TS Youth Exchange programs. He emphasised that youth between the age of 16 to 19 years can
participate under this program. Duration may be 2 months or 1 year. In this
program youth from one country will go to other country. They will be provided
free accommodation & hospitality by TS members in their home. They may
study in another country for a year. Travel expenses should be borne by TS
Adyar. This will help a lot in
cultivating seeds of TS culture amongst the youth.
Animal Rights Manifesto & Domesticated Animals:-
Mr. Michel presented paper on Animal Rights. It was emphasized that TS
members should be vegetarian. More & more people in the world are
moving towards vegetarianism. It was discussed that animals also have right to
live & love. If this message is spread it will help a lot. It was discussed that TS should encourage
Vegan.
Second International Youth Convention from 27 to 29 December 2019 (3
days) at Adyar :-
It was decided that International
Youth Convention will be held from 27 to 29 December 2019 at Adyar. It will be
for the age upto 45 years.
International Convention from 31 Dec 2019 to 05 Jan 2020 :-
TS International Convention will be
held at Indian Section Head Quarters
at Vasanasi from 31 December 2019 to 05
January 2020.The Theme will be “Nurturing the Divine Seed”. All members are
requested to attend the same. It may not be possible for all to attend. In such
cases they should send their
Registration though not physically attending. This will create link in
convention work and it will have contribution for Master’s work. As a
preparation lot of infrastructure changes are taking place at Varanasi. Telecast
will be available. New auditorium will be made, which will be named Radha
Burnier Theatre. New hostel will be called Rohit Mehta Hostel.
Applied Theosophy A new project proposal:–
Mr. VicHao Chin Jr presented paper on ‘Applied Theosophy for Future of
TS’. The following are areas that can be promoted
for applied theosophy for survival of TS:
*Meditation *Stress Management *Parenting *Marital Relationship
*Self-transformation Seminar *
Education
*Vegetarianism *Animal Welfare
*Peace-building *Inter-religious Harmony *Character Building Program *Youth
Camps
*Youth Exchange Programs *Public Magazines or E-magazines on Applied Theosophy
*Institutionalized Charity Work
How to Improve / Utilize Adyar After Renovation:-
Members discussed various improvement
projects at Adyar. Presently LBC is
under renovation. Blavatsky Bungalow is already renovated. It was discussed
how Adyar can be used by those who seek knowledge throughout the year.
Overall there were wonderful deliberations and brain storming at
Naarden. It was a wonderful experience to be in
Naarden and to participate in deliberations. Next meeting at Naarden will be from 19 June 2020 to 24 June 2020
and 24 June 2021 to 29 June 2021. GC members are expected to note dates for next two years and plan accordingly.
