Above mission statement in short covers our objects in brief. Goals have been set for future. On the similar line our Indian Section General Secretary Mr. Pradeep Gohil and Shri V Narayanan, Treasurer and their dedicated team had organised first ever goal setting 2 day meeting at Bhowali. Goals of all Federations and Indian Section were deliberated and decided for the year 1st October 2018 to 30th September 2019. This will give guidance, motivation, roadmaps to our activities. All our members are requested to help in achieving our goals. I wish our members will volunteer to participate in workers training course and study camp at Bhowali near Nainital in Summer. Our emphasis is on how to utilize our assets to maximum advantage without compromising on our Theosophical Principles. This year TS will open new Theosophical School at Adyar. It is always better to mould children to our TS principles at a young age. At this age they do not have any preconceived ideas.

Bombay is financial capital of India. Our Theosophical Society is having multiple philanthropic activities. Nowadays all corporates are doing their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This helps development of our nation, which has second largest population in the world. I appeal to our members, who can help in getting CSR funds for TS activities, to come forward and help Theosophical movement.

I wish all members will have good health and peaceful life in coming year. Hope to see you all more often in our gatherings. You can reach me on my email Id: cavrpandya@gmail.com or on phone 07021778977.

NEWS & NOTES

FOUNDATION DAY jointly by BTF & Blavatsky Lodge

on 17th November 2018 at Besant Hall:

The Meeting was opened with The Prayers of All Religions & Universal Prayer. Bro. Navin Kumar welcomed all and said that the Founders Madam H. P. Blavatsky and Col. H. S. Olcott on landing in Mumbai in 1979 had formed Blavatsky Lodge TS, the Premier Lodge of India. BTF President Bro. Vinayak Pandya speaking on ‘Why do we celebrate Foundation Day?’ said: It is to get refreshed with TS History and to contemplate on our pursuits to live Theosophy. Are we working for Universal Brotherhood in daily life? J.K. has said, ‘You are the world, and the world is you’. To understand this no teacher is needed, each one has to realize and progress. E.g. is one able to control Anger?

Blavatsky Lodge President Sis. Kashmira Khambatta spoke on challenges of the Founders. Materialism was there and People without realizing the greatness of Theosophical Teachings opposed Theosophy. People were not open to teachings of all religions.

Blavatsky Lodge Vice-President Bro. Navin Kumar gave a PPP on TS starting with quotes of the Masters, The Founders, Presidents of TS and CWL. He covered TS activities in Bombay with Group Photos of early days leading to BTF Annual Sessions graced by Dignitaries and activities at Blavatsky Lodge & Juhu Theosophical Society up to 2018. The presentation dedicated to Late Sis. Goolcher Manjra was ended with invoking the blessings of the Masters.

Sis. Aban Amroliwalla read Q&A from book ‘HPB’s  Conclusion’ pertaining to future of TS, selflessness, study, practical realization of Brotherhood and other guidelines to take Theosophical Society forward as it will lift the understanding of humanity.

Sis. Jasmine Cawasji read from C. W. Leadbeater’s book ‘How I came toTheosophy?’ chapter ‘I meet our Founder’, which was his experience of Meeting Madam H. P. Blavatsky at a meeting of London Lodge.Bro. Navin Kumar read quotes of HPB from book with her Quotations. Sis. Ruby Khan read about HPB”s views on Maturity of Mind. Bro. Berthram Redwood said that HPB worked against dogmatic ideas of Church and gave to humanity esoteric understanding of Love, Truth & Wisdom. Shri Apurva Parekh spoke about need to control mind & anger. He added Gandhiji used to resort to fasting if things had gone wrong in Satyagrah for independence.

Sis. Navaz Dhalla narrated life of HPB, her commitment to the Masters, her sacrifice and her great books. Sis. Rajam Pillai said people have undermined Pioneer Workers, especially Annie Besant. Courage and vision like hers are needed for ‘Satyamev Jayate’.

Sis. Mahazaver Dalal said that Brethren of Bombay have special significance for the Foundation Day as the Founders HPB and HSO on landing in Bombay had founded our Blavatsky Lodge as the First Lodge of India. Initially even TS HQ was in Bombay. This is the day to pay homage with reverence and gratitude to the Masters, the Light Bringers HPB & HSO, the Charter Members of TS Lodges and to pledge to learn & live Theosophy.

Sis. Aban Patel recollecting her school days shared how seeds of Theosophy were sown in her young mind by Late Sis. Mehra Dhalla and her Principal, whose answer to ‘whether Zoroastrianism or Judaism is great’ was ‘There is no religion Higher than Truth’. Sis.Aban added ‘Theosophy came to me when I was in school, but I came to Theosophical Society only few years ago’.

Prospective Member Shri Ganesh Puranik shared how he came to Theosophy. Usually he has to work up to 10.00 p.m. in office, but he was happy that his office got over at 5.00 p.m. and he was able to attend the Foundation Day.

The Foundation Day Meeting ended with a Sanskrit Prayer.

THEOSOPHY IN DAILY LIFE

By Dr. Deepa Padhi, International Vice-President

Talk on 28th October 2018 at BTF 87th Annual Session

[May this article inspire us for

our New Year Resolutions - Editor]

In one of her speeches, Madam H P. Blavatsky had said, “All may not be occultists, but all can be Theosophists”. Theosophy as we know is not just a bundle of metaphysical concepts or theories but a way of life to be lived. There is a tendency in the human mind to be content with theoretical understanding of spiritual truth and not to proceed further by acting according to that understanding, because the effort to live that life calls for strong determination, perseverance, courage, personal sacrifice and other qualities as well. People are not usually willing to move so easily out of their comfort zones.

Daily life is a practice through which the goal of spiritual life can be attained.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna is asked by Arjuna, “How does a man of steady wisdom (sthitaprajna) speak, how does he sit and how does he walk? (Sthitadhih kim prabhaseta kimasita brajet kim?)

Our day to day actions in our life are really the heart of the matter. They are the manifestations of our inner nature, inner self. They get reflected in one’s posture, in tone of the voice, relationship with family members, as also with subordinates and bosses in the workplace. It also matters how the person relates with the surroundings, with the stray cats and dogs, with plants and insects. Theosophy believes that all beings and things have but one source – ‘Consciousness’ and all are knitted in the web of interrelatedness and interdependence.

If we analyze our day to day life, we will understand that we are not only dependent on Nature such as sunlight, air, water, earth, animals and plants, but also on individuals around us. When the domestic help does not turn up one day, our life seemingly comes to a standstill. We are dependent on them who provide service to us and without whom our life style gets totally disturbed. Each one of them who connects with us is a part of our life and together we are parts of the Whole. Therefore, it is our bounden duty to be caring, sympathetic and  understanding towards all.

As far as the natural elements are concerned, the effort should be made not to pollute the air and the water or create ecological imbalances adversely affecting mankind causing avoidable sufferance to all.

Theosophy is the Art of Life, in addition to being the science of life. AsHPB said, “Theosophy is not one science, but embraces every science in life, moral and physical.”

The beauty of life lies in natural living; living as a child of Nature - innocent, pure and joyous, but keenly perceptive and sensitive. Spend some time looking at the butterfly, how with detachment it moves from one flower to the other. Listen to the sweet musical voice of the cuckoo who sings hiding itself behind the leaves and branches with no expectation of any applause or admiration .This reminds us of the words of HPB,“Help Nature and work on with her, and Nature will regard thee as one of her creators and make obeisance.’’

Simple living is encouraged in Theosophy.  It helps the individual in getting more time to be with the inner self. Most of our time is wasted on acquisition and maintenance of unnecessary things. A theosophist must know how to control `artificial desires. Desires will arise but there should be conscious efforts to understand whether they are necessary or not. `Greed is sometimes like a small seed’ says Radha Burnier. `It appears dead from outside, but with stimulation it germinates, grows and destroys.’ We need to learn the lesson of simple life which our ancient seers had taught us: ‘Simple living, high thinking’.

Many people have a misconception that earning more money is wrong and it is a materialistic attitude. But it is not true. Hindu philosophy believes in four human values of which one is Artha (wealth) while others are Kama (desire), Dharma (morality) and Moksa (self-realisation). A holistic life needs to be lived by taking into consideration all these four values. One can earn as much as one wishes through honest and ethical means and the surplus can be used for the benefit of the unprivileged people.

Mark Zuckerberg, the multi-millionaire, young founder of Face Book, while addressing the students of Harvard University in the convocation said, `when one gets settled in life, his responsibility is not over. He needs to help and support those who are struggling hard to earn a living.’

Problem arises when Artha or wealth is considered as the only human value to be achieved by any means.

In the Puranas, except Lord Shiva, all other deities are portrayed as kings and queens. Abundance is spirituality. Our worldly life is not opposed to Theosophical or spiritual life. Every human being has the moral duty to be rich. Money can do little to youor me but money can do lot of things for others through you and me.

Before taking to Buddhism, Anathapindika, a very successful and wealthy being, once asked Buddha, “Must I give up my wealth, my home, my business and go into homelessness in order to attain the bliss of a religious life? Buddha replied, “It is not life and wealth and power that enslave men, but clinging to life and wealth and power. And whatever men do, whether they remain in the world as artisans ,merchants and officers of the King…..let them be diligent and energetic….. and if they struggle in life without cherishing envy or hatred, if  they live in the world not a life of self but a life of truth, then surely joy, peace and bliss will dwell in their minds.”Our Masters have never advocated running away from the world of life, but being one with it. The difference is only of attitude – whether it is selfish or unitive. One can be rich and at the same time remain unattached to the riches.

Learning the skills of life is important for a Theosophist. He is expected to face the challenges in life with courage, confidence, determination and strong will power.

Last year a very sorrowful and unfortunate incident happened in Nagpur. It was in the news. The only son of doctor parents was given poison by his mother and she committed suicide by taking the same poison. The reason was - the son got 85% in the twelfth examination and that would not have got him a seat in any good engineering or medical institution.

If only the parents would have known about Theosophy or read any Theosophical books, at least two lives would have been saved. There is a purpose, a reason for our existence. It is just not accidental and we have no right to end it. One of Sri Krishna’s message to Arjuna in the Gita is, “By escaping from problems, you lose your opportunity to free yourself.” If aproblem cannot be solved by our effort, let us accept gracefully, dissolve by right understanding and evolve out of it.

Theosophy teaches the art of living amidst differences. Though we belong to one source, each one of us is different and unique. Whether good or bad, each has its own perceptions, opinions and ways. Problem arises when each expects others to accept his views and ways. Unless one tolerates the views of others, harmonious living is impossible. The purpose of our life is to learn the unitive way of living amidst differences. And in order to live such a life, one needs to cultivate the basic attributes of compassion, kindness, love, understanding and tolerance. With a loving smile, one can befriend one’s worst enemy. Smile is powerful. It can change millions of lives for the better. It is not a superficial gesture that starts and ends on the face. It comes from the heart and touches the heart of the recipient.` ‘Peace starts with a smile’, says Mother Teresa. Smiling helps to remain always  at peace within.

Theosophy advocates altruism or selflessness which is an attitude to be developed. As Gita says,`Desiring for yourself will bring troubles in your life, but desiring for others will bring true happiness in you.” It is advised that while maintaining relationship, don’t be calculative. Don’t be a beggar in relationship. Be a giver in relationship.

Theosophical life means a meditative life, an intuitive life which is lived in openness not in a closed room. It does not really need any particular time or place to sit with closed eyes. It is living in full awareness; only the vision has to be changed from the periphery to the centre.

In the book ‘At the Feet of the Master’ it is said, “…to hear the Master’s words is not enough; you must do what he says, attending to every word, taking every hint.”

People will not follow your advises, people will follow your examples, your actions. People will be inspired, motivated bywhat they see not by what they hear. While concluding I would like to emphasize that each one of us should be conscious of our own day to day actions, our behavior, our relationship with other sentient beings which only can give us the identity of our being a Theosophist.
