SUPPORT CONVENTION
2015-2016
Opening of the Support
Convention – 1st January 2016
2016
was heralded at Blavatsky Lodge with Festive decorations of Christmas Spirit by
Sis. Navaz Dhalla and Opening of the Support Convention 2015-2016. The Support
Convention was opened with The Prayers of All Religions & the Universal
Prayer. Brethren condoled the passing away of Past International Vice-President
Miss Joy Mills. Tributes were paid to her by Bro. Arni Narendran (printed in
this Bulletin).
Bro.
Navin Kumar showed the video of the
Presidential Address delivered by Mr. Tim Boyd at the Opening of the 140th
International Convention at Adyar on 31st December 2015. Speaking on the theme
of the Convention ‘Compassion and Universal Responsibility’ Mr. Tim Boyd said
that Brethren should develop responsibility to take Compassionate Action. The
World is interconnected and Life is not separate. Reading is good, but one has
to experience beyond reading. There is an expression that, ‘You must not only
learn the Truth; you must suffer it.’

Vatchha and Sis. Mahazaver Dalal shared
their thoughts.
2nd January 2016 – Cultural
Evening
It was a Cultural Evening in the spirit of Community singing held during the International
Support Conventions. Bro. Navin Kumar with opening handed over charge of the
evening to Master of Ceremony Sis. Aban Patel. BTF President Dr. Ajay Hora led
the Universal Prayer and welcomed all with playing the song ‘Swagatam, Shubha
Swagatam’ sung by renowned artists, which is usually played at International
events.
This
year the Cultural Evening was dedicated
to ‘Children of India’. Video of ‘Art Festival of Lady Engineer High
School’ was screened. The creativity of students displayed through their
paintings on varied themes, clay-work of Ganesha & other idols, ‘Best out
of Waste’ and projects to spread awareness on educational, social &
ecological issues were praise worthy. M.C. Sis Aban, who had seen the Art
Festival, praised their Art Teacher Mr. Anand, who taught all different modes
of art to students.
The
National Anthem of India was the Silent
National Anthem by hand and face actions and expressions of Deaf children.
Members of Maitreya Round Table created an uplifting atmosphere with Meera’s
Bhajan ‘Mane Chakar Rakhoji’. Bro. Birthram Redwood sang a soothing and
inspiring Healing Song.
It was an evening which
unfolded the talents of Brethren. Sis. Urvi Hora’s students Dr. Khevana Desai
& Deepal Pandya entertained all with a Gujarati Folk Dance. As Khevana
explained, a Folk Dance of the folks, by the folks, for the folks unites all.
Bro. Navin Kumar regaled the audience with a Magic trick and a song on a
Mouthorgan. Sis. Tanya Noor Baig played Russian and Western pieces on piano.
Sis. Freny Paghdiwala gave piano accompaniment for some songs. Sis. Zeena
Rastomji charmed every one with her enacted song ‘Whenever you feel afraid’.
There were solo songs by Bro. Keki Palkhiwalla, Bro. Rustom Dalal, Bro.
Khusroav Pavri and invitee Mrs. Chaudhari. Sis. Kerman Patel & Bro.
Berthram Redwood sang a duet. Group songs were by Brn. Navin Kumar, Navaz
Dhalla, Jesmine Cawasji & Keki Palkhiwalla. Sis. Pilloo Battiwalla played a
song on Key-board. The surprise of the evening was a dance by Latha & Navin
Kumar on a popular Hindi song. There were devotional songs by Sis. Silloo
Shroff & Sis. Freny Paghdiwala. The finale of the evening was a group
danceby many participating members, in which Bro. Noor Baig & Arni
Narendran also joined, on the carol ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ and to wish ‘Merry
Christmas & Happy New Year’.
The evening made the
participants and audience experience that ‘Music washes away from soul all dust
of life’ and ‘Family that sings & dances together, enjoys together’.

Bro Zinoo Master’s Talk on
‘Tani Ravani, geti Minoani – in the
Light of Theosophy’
Bro. Zinoo Master said that Jiddu Krishnamurti would say
during his talks: “The speaker is not here to speak and the listeners are not
here to listen but we are all together embarking upon a journey to discover the
truth” Let us follow in Krishnaji’s footsteps and discover the truth of the
words “tani Ravani geti Minoani” These
words form part of a prayer recited by Zoroastrians while tying the sacred
thread (Kusti).
The context in which these words are said is
that the devotee denounces Bad / Wrong Thoughts / Words / Actions and resolves
to turn back (Patet) and is repentant (Pasheman) for all sins committed by him
by his physical (tan) or non-physical (Ravan) bodies in the seen world (geti) or unseen world (Mino).
Our physical body is made of the food we eat,
namely Carbohydrates, Proteins, Water, salt etc. which are compounds of Carbon,
Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sodium & Chlorine (common salt), Calcium/ Iron
/ Iodine, etc. found in the physical world. Similarly our astral & mental
bodies are made up of astral & mental matter.
He quoted from At The Feet of The Master that
we are not the physical/ astral /mental bodies. We are the Higher Self (Atma /
Buddhi /Manas). He told a story about the disciple of a Guruji who told his
Master “I saw my body coming from there to here” when the Guruji beckoned him
to come near him. He also quoted Sri Ramana Maharshi who asked his disciples
“Who are the others?” when the disciples wanted to know how to help others.
Thus we are not our bodies but we are the Self
and our Self is identical with and in union with all other Selves. Our goal as
well as the ultimate goal of humanity is to attain Initiation & then
Adeptship. We have to achieve this goal not for our own aggrandizement but in
order to be able to help humanity and lift a little of the heavy burden and to
help the Masters in Their Work. Just as the journey of a thousand miles begins
with the first step (Chinese Proverb) we have to take the First Step NOW.
The journey is long and there is plenty of
time before the “Cut Off” point is reached but we must not be complacent. We
must not allow ourselves to float with the current of the river but swim
vigorously to reach the Sea of Perfection.
He explained that in the middle of the Fifth
Round and latest on its Sixth globe the door will be shut and only those who
have “entered the stream” (Srotapatti), i.e. attained the First Initiation will
be able to re incarnate thereafter in the Sixth and Seventh Rounds to reach
Adeptship which is the Goal of Humanity in this Chain. The rest will re
incarnate in the humanity of the next Chain to carry on their growth. The
choice is ours – whether we choose to suffer for fifty more lives or for five
hundred. Therefore we have to live our
lives not for the sake of our bodies but for our Higher Self which is our True
Self.
4th January 2016 - Mystic Star Ritual
Inspiring uplifting ceremony of Mystic Star
Ritual was performed with Sis. Jasmine Cawasji as ‘Power’ and all other
officers. Sis. Mahazaver Dalal explained the salient features and purpose of
the Ritual written by C. Jinarajadasa.
5th
January 2016 - Closing of the Support
Convention
With
Over-view of the 140th International Convention
Bro. Navin Kumar screened a specially prepared
Over-view of the 140th International Convention. At the outset he showed part
of ‘Mini Tour of Adyar’, which was presented by President Tim Boyd at the
Convention. He covered snippets of the programmes from the Opening Day 31st
December 2015 to the Closing Day 5th January 2016. He tried to show the
Delegates coming from many countries and different parts of India. At the
Indian Section Convention he showed the BTF greetings given by Bro. Vinayak
Pandya. He covered Mr. Tim Boyd’s Inaugural Address for the India Section
Convention when he urged Brethren to practice compassion with responsibility
& insight into wisdom, as Compassion is the Law of our very existence. One has to improve oneself and the
environment around him. One must open oneself deeply for higher possibilities,
which are waiting for us. Convention is ‘a Gathering of Consciousness for a
Purpose’. One needs to become compassionate, not just wise.
The screening was followed by sharing of
thoughts by Sis. Mahazaver Dalala and Bros. Berthram Redwood, Arni Narendran
& Dhananjay Singh.
The Support Convention ended with thanks to
Bro. Navin Kumar for organizing the programme, to participants and to Brethren,
who by attending joined in attuning energy towards Adyar for the 140th
International Convention.
8th January 2016
Impressions
of the 140th International Convention
By
BTF Vice-President Bro. Vinayak Pandya
Bro. Vinayak Pandya was the only member of
Bombay Theosophical Federation to attend the 140th International
Convention at Adyar. Hence, he prepared a special PP Presentation with 50+
slides. As he said he tried to show, what was not covered by the screening for
U-Tube and there were many firsts at this Convention, starting with the
Lighting of Lamp and prayers by Olcott School students. There were PP
Presentations and a live talk on screen of a speaker who could not come to
Adyar. At Q & A Session, this time all four members of the Panel had to
give answers. He showed the induction of New Members by President Mr. Tim Boyd.
One of them was his wife Malti Pandya, who was touched by this Convention and
after many years had decided to join TS.
He had conveyed the Greetings of BTF at the
Indian section Convention. His suggestion was accepted to avoid reading of the
Annual Report, which is already circulated and to use that time for
contemplation and sharing views. As the BTF Representative to Indian Section
Council, he had attended IS Council Meetings. He contributed to the smooth
swift working of the Council and unanimous election of the Office Bearers and
Executive Committee Members.
Sis. Mahazaver Dalal thanked Bro. Vinayak
Pandya for representing BTF at the Convention. She also explained the purpose
of the meeting for ‘Impressions of the TS Convention’.
Bro.
Vinayak Pandya answering Bro. Navin Kumar’s question ‘What is the difference
between Love & Compassion’ said: The difference cannot be described. It has to be
observed, experienced. Ahimsa of Jainism is nothing but compassion, as it
believes in not hurting any being. If one visits a sick person and cheers him
up with a smile, it is compassion and his love strengthens the sick. Jesus
Christ’s last words on the Cross, were compassionate. Compassion cannot come
overnight. Our Lodge Meetings are to recharge our compassion. Where ever we are
working compassion has to be shown.
Bro. Vinayak Pandya’s daughter added that Love
is within you, compassion comes from other person. Bros. Berthram Redwood, Arni
Narendran, Dhananjay Singh, Fali Cooper & Rustom Dalal also shred their
thoughts. In the end Bro. Navin Kumar thanked Bro. Vinayak Pandya for
recreating the Adyar atmosphere.

REMEMBERING
Ms JOY MILLS
Past
International Vice-President
by Bro. Arni
Narendran
At Opening of BTF
Support Convention 2016
The International Convention at Adyar was due to begin on the 31st of December 2015. News of passing away
of Sister Joy Mills, an outstanding Theosophist at 10.35 a.m. on 29th December
2015 started appearing on the Facebook page of Theosophists all over the
world. Joy Mills was born on 9th October
1920 at Lakewood, Ohio in the United States, to a father who was an Engineer
and a mother who was a Teacher. At the age of eight she lost her mother at a
premature age of forty nine, which impacted her very deeply. On her father’s
remarriage she was adopted by the Mills couple with whom she grew up. During
one of her childhood trips to the Ozarks Mountain she encountered an unusual
Experience, standing in front of a Tree, she was able to sense ‘A feeling of Oneness’
with the Tree. This encounter was a Life
changing experience which made her ponder beyond the physical realm. Madam Blavatsky describes such experience as
‘Direct Beholding’.
Even
before her exposure to the Theosophical
Society she had developed interest in Dzogchen path of Tibetan Budhism
which probably explains her excitement when she happened to meet the Dalai Lama
at Dharamsala in 1972 along with Quest Books Editor Ms Helen Zahara, in
connection with a publication. She later had an opportunity to have Tea with
him during the 1975 centenary year of the Society at Adyar, which memory she
cherished till her last days. She had the privilege of introducing the works of
Madam Blavatsky to the Dalai Lama.
Except
for a brief period of professional Teaching assignments, she was mostly working
at the TS Headquarters at Wheaton, Illinois. She was later President of the
Theosophical Society of America between 1965 to 1974 and thereafter
International Vice President at the Adyar HQ 1974 to 1980. She also served the
TS in Australia for a few years. She spent the rest of her life initially as a
Director of the Krotona Institute of Theosophy and thereafter in writing books
and lecturing. At the age of 96, she penned her last words of Wisdom in a
message for the Convention which was read out in the Inaugural Presidential
Address by Bro Tim Boyd.
I
had the good fortune of interacting with her while I was a resident at Adyar as Manager of the
International Youth Centre, in the 70s. She would invariably reflect upon her
Theosophical wisdom in her conversations. We were awed by her clarity and
knowledge. As a TS youth leader in 1940, the question of attracting youth was
her major concern as it is even today.
During
the ‘100 Years of Ethics in the Secret Doctrine’ Conference in 1988, Bro Jan
Kind, the Dutch Theosophist from Brazil
had interviewed her and described her as an ‘Icon in the Theosophical
World’. Sis Joy Mills lectured across fifty countries and among her Books that
stand out are – ‘Reflections on an Ageless wisdom’, a commentary on the Mahatma
Letters; ‘One True Advance in Theosophy and the quest for its Meaning’. Among her milestone contributions to
Theosophy, was helping set up over 100 Lodges in her country and the
establishment of the Quest Publishing House - a communication arm of the TS in
America. She remained Single, remarking
jokingly that she would have been a terrible Housewife.
Regarding
‘The Secret Doctrine’ she says that the wisdom expounded in the Book is the
path of the Bodhisattva. One word to describe the Book is – ‘COMPASSION’.
Sister Joy Mills is no more in her Body but her contribution to Theosophy and
the Society is eternal. All of us will surely miss a ‘Guiding Star’. To quote
her own words:
“The Mind likes to separate
‘Me’ from the ‘Other’. We need to be
aware of that because it brings us back to the fundamental question ‘Who am I’
and this question evolves as you evolve.”
As
HPB said in so many different ways, once we have felt ‘Compassion’ for another
Human being, we have begun to Awaken to the very purpose of Meaning of
Existence. That is the Essence of Theosophy.”

PRACTICAL
THEOSOPHY
RADHA BURNIER
Past International President &
General Secretary of Indian Section from 1961 to1978
Courtesy:
The Indian Theosophist
Special issue of Oct. & Nov. 2015
on the occasion of 125
Years of Indian Section TS
In
the early days of the Theosophical Society, the great Adepts who were the
inspiration behind the founding of the Society made it clear that they were not
interested in the progress of any particular individuals, however intellectual
or qualified they considered themselves to be. Letters to A.P. Sinnet point out
that the adepts are interested only in humanity as a whole and in individuals
only to the extent to which the individuals are willing to subordinate their
own interests for the good of humanity. In The
Key to Theosophy, H.P.B. says that the aims of Theosophy are several: “but
the most important are those which are likely to lead to the relief of human
suffering under any or every form, moral as well as physical”. Therefore we might say that the entire
purpose of the Theosophical Society is to bring about the upliftment and good
of humanity. The purpose is not to help just a few individuals, to gather
here and there pleasant groups of like-minded people. The Society exists to
disseminate that Wisdom which we call Theosophy, which confers benefit on all
people alike.
The
Adepts also make it clear in a number of letters that the knowledge which is at
their disposal can be made available only on certain conditions. They specify that there must be a real
hunger for the wisdom in anyone who wishes to receive instructions and
knowledge from them. This fact has been known in all ancient traditions. In
At the Feet of the Master, the
qualifications on the path are described as Discrimination, Desirelessness,
Good conduct and Love, the last of which, in ancient days, was denoted by the
Sanskrit word mumukshutva, which
means thirst for liberation. Without a real thirst for wisdom, a hunger for it,
as the adepts say, it is not possible to obtain or disseminate wisdom.
Really to fulfill the
purpose for which the Society was founded members must have not only the hunger
for wisdom but also the love of humanity. In
various letters the Adepts speak about this too. On one occasion they wrote
that he alone can gain their secrets who has “the love of humanity at heart,
who is capable of grasping thoroughly the idea of regenerating practical brotherhood”.
Practical Theosophy implies that one must have the capacity to help the world.
Knowledge which does not enable one to bring about the upliftment of the world,
in the true sense, is not practical Theosophy; it is speculative, theoretical.
Perhaps it is not Theosophy at all, because it is not wisdom. Wisdom is what
brings about the good, which draws out the purest, the best in everyone. H.P.B.
says that “the only decree of Karma- an eternal and immutable decree- is
absolute Harmony in the world of matter, as it is in the world of Spirit”. It
“guards the good”. Whenever imbalance is created by human beings, by the human
mind, the law which stands for the good puts it right.
The essence of wisdom, of
Theosophy is to be able, at every moment, in every situation in which one is
placed, to do that which is truly beneficial to the life around, to help it to
grow and to reveal the goodness which is in it. The
entire evolutionary plan is one in which at all times everything which exists
is unfolding something of its own goodness, some hidden meaning or significance
which is within it. At every point where life manifests itself, it is trying to
convey in a greater measure hidden goodness, which one might call beauty or
truth or love. By the wisdom which discovers goodness, in other things and
helps them to reveal the good more fully, one reveals what is best in oneself
more fully. The two go together.
All opening out
of one’s faculties is the perception of what is true and good in another. The
average person sees very little. Mostly his eyes perceive only concrete things,
but even they are observed very incompletely. If he walks in a park, for
example, he is not aware of all that lies there, of the fullness of beauty, of the
harmony of colours, of the light and shade in all its glory. We rarely give our
attention, our heart to what we look at. When we look at human being we see
only casually what is outside. But there is a great deal besides what is
concrete and external in the garden, the river, the mountain, the person in
front. There may be underlying beauty, harmony, many hidden virtues. Being
unaware of virtue, we remain partly blind; we fail to see that which it is
really trying to reveal. When the observer does realize the hidden harmony,
then he is opening something within himself, an area of consciousness which
heretofore had not functioned and sensed the harmony. So at the moment when it
senses something other than the concrete, it is also unfolding some faculty
within itself which was not functioning before. To perceive the truth, the
goodness which is hidden in other things is truly a flowering of the faculties
and sensibilities within oneself.
To
receive a hidden message is not a matter of doing it once and for all. All that is of real value- goodness, truth,
beauty- reveals itself afresh all the time. The sacred word Om is said to represent all
manifestation and also that which is unmanifest. That word called Pranava in Sanskrit, signifies that
which is always extraordinarily new. It suggests that manifestation at any
level is all the time revealing not only qualities which are of eternal value,
but, revealing them afresh in new modes and new ways. To illustrate: Watching
quietly a beautiful mountain, observing not merely the outer form, at one
moment there may be awareness of the great dignity and loftiness it reveals.
One may go away and come another evening to look at the same mountain, to find
it reveals something quite different- perhaps a sense of marvelous purity
evoked by the whiteness of the snow which lies there. A third time, it may
allude to that which is enduring, stable and immutable. So looking at it on
different occasions, sensing the beauty of loftiness, great dignity, of
indestructibility, of purity, each time that one is open to it, there is the
truth of something different. But if the heart is not open, a person who sees
the same mountain suffers that misfortune which is called “getting used to it”.
The consciousness becomes opaque and so what is, does not make any impress upon it at all.
We act according to what we
see. Those who perceive only the
outer form, and that too in a fragmentary and incomplete way, miss what is
essential in life- the goodness and the truth which
is revealing from within, which underlies the outward things. Then all their
actions are wrong, they are bound to create disharmony, conflict and suffering.
Therefore, it is important for a person who searches for wisdom to see rightly.
Perception always requires the use of
organs of sense and also that of inner organ which is the mind. If the mind
is not “present”, one does not see even when the physical sense organ comes
into contact with an object. A person may walk through the garden, and if he is
preoccupied with various things-some quarrel with his wife, a problem in his office- and is completely
absorbed in them, he may not know what is in that garden.
Theosophy is altruism,
first and last. On noticing a need, it is possible
that it says “This needs to be done, somebody ought to do it” there is also the
possibility that it says “Yes I will do it” and derives sense of satisfaction,
of virtue and smugness. Every one of these manifestations of the personal self,
distorts perception of things as they are. It is only by self-observation and
self-knowledge that one can be aware of deceptions and limitations.
In
The Mahatma Letters, when speaking
about the hunger for wisdom as an absolutely essential qualification to find
the wisdom the word “unselfish” is added. An
“unselfish hunger for wisdom” is necessary in order to learn.
If
there is no wisdom in the members of T.S., how can it help the world? It is
easy to think in terms of obtaining more members, getting more publicity,
distributing more leaflets and so on and so forth. Clearly, it is not enough just
to distribute books and literature; something has to flow from the members
themselves, something which has the vitality of truth, of wisdom, the power of
an unselfish yearning to bring about the good of all things.
The Theosophical Society’s
true value is in the undeclared Object, which is to find wisdom, the Theosophy, the knowledge which teaches how to bring
about the real good-not temporary good, not what we think is good, but that
good which aids every manifestation of life to unfold in the greater measure
its beauty, its truth and its significance.
