NEWS &
NOTES
ADYAR DAY MEETING jointly by BTF &
Blavatsky Lodge on 17th February 2018 at Besant Hall: The meeting was opened with
the Prayers of All Religions and the Universal Prayer. BTF Secretary Sis.
Mahazaver Dalal welcomed all recollecting her experience of attending the Adyar
Day Meeting at Adyar in Feb 2013 graced by the Late Past International
President Radha Burnier. Blavatsky Lodge President Sis. Kashmira Khambatta
conducted the meeting.
Sis. Zeena Rastomji paid tributes to Bishop C.W. Leadbeater,
Col. H. S. Olcott, J. Krishnamurthy and Giordano Bruno by sharing their
inspiring quotes. CWL’s quotes were
on avoiding flesh in diet and to understand that alive & dead are alike in
the hands of perfect power & perfect wisdom directed by perfect love. HSO’s quotes were on how pleasure of
senses brings disappointment, how one should be positively good and not to
believe because one has heard, but to believe as per one’s conscience and act
accordingly. JK’s quotes were on
learning; it is not only passing exams, it is a process from birth to death; ************************************************************
Meditation is to
be aware of every thought & feeling and no one can live without
relationship. Giordano Bruno’s quotes
were on Truth; it does not change even a
majority does not believe in it; Divine Love raises, supports & magnifies
its servant; the whole soul is present in whole body and all which lives must
feed & nourish itself suitable to the way in which it lives.
Bro. Berthram Redwood speaking on Giordano Bruno traced his spiritual
evolution and his quest for truth. His courage and commitment to go through
torture by the Church and even to embrace the Chariot of Fire for the Truth he
gave to humanity.
On
Adyar Day stalwarts and silent Theosophists are also fondly remembered. In that
spirit Sis Aban Patel remembering Joy
Mills said: Respected and admired worldwide for her deep study and
understanding of the Ageless Wisdom; a member of the Theosophical Society for
75 long years; who served as the National President of the American and Australia
Sections as well as International Vice President; beloved teacher for many and
author of a number of Theosophical Books, who spread joy wherever she went and
whatever work she did; is none other than Joy Mills.
Sis. Jasmine Cawasji paid tributes to
Mable Collins,
who had worked for HPB and had assisted her with her publication ‘Lucifer’. She
was a novelist and Mystical writer. She was the author of one of the Three Gems
of Theosophy ‘Light on the Path’ and ‘The Idyll of the White Lotus’.Sis. Aban Amroliwalla shared her first visit to Adyar to attend the School of Wisdom. Prof. C. A. Shinde had conducted a course on ‘science of Living’ and had explained that it is ‘A science of knowing one’s own self’. Sis.Aban recollected daily ½ hour meditation, preparations for their presentations, visiting Adyar library and experiencing the beauty and serenity of Adyar.
Sis Navaz Dhalla sang the Adyar Song.
The
surprise item of the evening to welcome Bro. Navin Kumar after his surgery was Line Dance, choreographed by Sis. Zeena
Rastomji. She with Brn. Kashmira Khambatta, Jasmine Cawasji, Aban Amroliwalla,
Ketayun Irani, Ruby Khan, Mahtab Tarapore, Arni Narendran and Berthram Redwood
entertained all with their joyful dancing.
Dr. Pervin Keki Surti, Ph.D., M.A. (Avesta –
Pahilavi) expressed her thanks to Blavatsky Lodge for permitting her access to
valuable books of the Library for preparation of her Thesis. She added that
Music is the base of all creations. Colour & Sound emanate from it. Music,
representing innocence, kindness and piety with golden extravaganza, calls
humanity to merge into Divinity.
BLAVATSKY LODGE SUNDAY EXPERIMENTAL THIRD MEETING on 4th March 2018 to
learn about Order of the Round Table:
Sis. Thrity Dalal, Past Leading Knight of
Maitreya Lodge, Mumbai, India giving history of International Order of The Round Table said
that it is an international order for young people of all creeds and races.
Inspired by the Arthurian legends and with ‘Service’ as its keynote, the modern
Round Table Movement had its genesis in London on July 25th, 1908, under the
aegis of the Theosophical Society and the direction of the Order’s Founder and
First Senior Knight, George Herbert Whyte (1879-1917). Knight Thrity also spoke
about its Aim, Objects, Motto, Pledge, Kings Chair & Salute, Membership,
Ceremonies and International Publication ‘Sophia’.
Past Leading Knight Deepa
Kapoor said that Past Chief Knight of India Rusi Toddywalla had introduced her to
Round Table. RT is a beautiful way of growing up in the atmosphere of Righteous
Vibrations. Past Chief Knight of India
Jer Jussawalla had inculcated ideals of RT in her group.
Squire Navaz Dhalla said that she is happy to joined Maitreya Round Table as each
ceremony is performed with dedication, power of speech and perfection.
Current Leading Knight of
Maitreya Round Table Sonal Singh added that for her
there had been an aspiration from the first stage of ‘Page’ to become ‘Knight’
and to live life with RT ideals. Each ceremony has a teaching, like ‘Bread
& Salt’ Ceremony teaches ‘Value of Sharing’.
Past Leading Knight of
Maitreya RT Farhad Dalal said one learns in schools
& colleges, but RT prepares one for challenges of life in outer world.
Watching his mother at RT meetings, he wanted to join the Order. The colours of
the collars also attracted me at the age of 7. From ceremonies he inculcated
virtues of each stage, i.e. from Page to Knight. Having a green finger, he
likes ‘Flower Ceremony’, which teaches respect for other lives. ‘Christmas
ceremony’ with Carols held at the end of the year covers all virtues. RT
prepares one to impart virtues in others.
Bro. Berthram Redwood spoke about mystical & esoteric angles of ‘Flower Ceremony’ and
‘Bread & Salt’ Ceremony’.
Sis. Mahazaver Dalal thanked Maitreya Round Table for annually holding open RT
ceremonies to avail of inspiring experience of beautiful Ceremonies.
Bro. Navin Kumar appreciated punctuality, discipline and devotion of Maitreya RT,
with which very efficiently the ceremonies were performed.
BTF President Bro. Vinayak
Pandya appreciated First Sunday Experimental
Meetings of Blavatsky Lodge and wished that now it is regularly held and
Brethren join with Family & Friends.
Note: The article on the International Order of Round Table will be
printed in BTF Bulletin of May 2018.
JALALUDDIN RUMI
By
Sis. Mahrukh Shroff
Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi was a 13th Century Persian Sunni Muslim
Poet, Jurist, Islamic scholar, Theologian and Sufi Mystic.
Rumi was born on 30 September, 1207 to native
Persian-speaking parents, originally from the Balkh, in present-day Afghanistan. Rumi was educated by his father Baha ud-Din
Walad, who was a Maulvi. When the Mongols invaded Central Asia sometime between 1215 and 1220, his father, with
his whole family and a group of disciples, set out westwards and settled in
Konya, Anatolya, which is a part of Turkey today.
After his father’s death Rumi took his position as a
Maulvi and taught in Mosques and Madressas.
In 1244 he met a Dervish named Shams-e Tabrizi and that meeting completely changed
his life. From an accomplished teacher and jurist, Rumi was transformed into an
ascetic. He died in 1273 and was buried in Konya, Turkey and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage.
Rumi believed passionately in the use of music, poetry
and dance as a path for reaching God. For Rumi, music helped devotees to focus
their whole being on the divine, and to do this so intensely that the soul was
both destroyed and resurrected. It was from these ideas that the practice
of Whirling Dervishes developed into a ritual form. This music and
dance ritual represents a mystical journey of spiritual ascent through mind and
love to the Perfect One. In this journey, the seeker symbolically turns towards
the truth, grows through love, abandons the ego, finds the truth and arrives at
the Perfect. The
seeker then returns from this spiritual journey, with
greater maturity, to love and to be of service to the whole of creation without
discrimination towards beliefs, races, classes and nations.
Rumi’s influence transcends national borders and
ethnic divisions. Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns and other Central
Asian Muslims have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven
centuries. His poems, mostly written in Persian, have been widely translated
into many languages. His poem Masnavi, composed in Konya, is
considered one of the greatest poems of the Persian language. His works
are widely read today in their original language across Iran and the Persian-speaking world.
On Love
Through
Love all that is bitter will be sweet
Through
Love all that is copper will be gold.
Through
Love all dregs will turn to purest wine.
Through
Love all pain will turn to medicine.
Through
Love the dead will all become alive.
Through
Love the king will turn to slave.
On
Death
I
died to the mineral state and became a plant,
I died to the vegetal state and reached animality,
I died to the animal state and became a man,
Then what should I fear?
I died to the vegetal state and reached animality,
I died to the animal state and became a man,
Then what should I fear?
I have never become less from dying.
At the next charge (forward) I will die to human nature,
So that I may lift up (my) head and wings
At the next charge (forward) I will die to human nature,
So that I may lift up (my) head and wings
(and soar) among the angels,
And I must (also) jump from the river
And I must (also) jump from the river
of (the state of) the angel,
Everything perishes except His Face,
Once again I will become sacrificed
Everything perishes except His Face,
Once again I will become sacrificed
from (the state of) the angel,
I will become that which cannot come into the imagination,
Then I will become non-existent;
I will become that which cannot come into the imagination,
Then I will become non-existent;
On Grief
Learn from the messenger his Alchemy;
be satisfied with what
He gives you.
And when the envoy ‘Grief’ come to your house,
then take him to your
breast like an old friend!
Weave not like spiders’nets from grief’s saliva,
in which the woof and
warp are both decaying,
But give the grief to HIM who granted it,
and do not talk about it
anymore.
When you are silent, His speech is your speech;
When you don’t weave, the weaver will be HE.
On God
I’ve seen no joy without you in both worlds,
I’ve seen wonders - nothing was like you.
I’ve put the soul’s ear at the window “heart”
I’ve heard some words but never seen the lips!
You’ve lavished grace abundant on your slave,
I’ve seen no reason but your endless grace.
Cupbearer, dearer than my eyes,
I have not seen one like you.
Pour out such wine that I may leave myself
I have seen only fatigue in my existence.
O Endless love, Divine manifestation,
I’ve seen no name that’s worthy of you.
We are like iron scraps, your love the magnet.
You without seeking are the source of seeking!

GUIDANCE
When I meditated on the word GUIDANCE,
I kept seeing ’dance’ at the end of the
word.
I remember reading that doing God’s will is
a lot like dancing.
When two people try to lead, nothing feels
right.
The movement doesn’t flow with the music,
and everything is quite uncomfortable and
jerky.
When one person realizes and lets the other
lead,
both bodies begin to flow with the music.
One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge
to the back
or by pressing lightly in one direction or
another.
It’s as if two become one body moving
beautifully.
The dance takes surrender, willingness and
attentiveness
from one person and gentle guidance and
skill from the other.
My eyes drew back to the word ‘Guidance’.
When I saw ‘G’ I thought of God, followed by
‘u’ and ‘I’.
God ‘u’ and ‘I’ ‘Dance’.
God You and I Dance!
This statement is what Guidance means to me.
As I lowered my head, I became willing to
trust
that I would get guidance about my life.
Once again, I became willing to let God
lead.
My prayer for you today is that God’s
blessings and mercies
be upon you and your family every day.
May you abide in him as He abides in you.
Dance together with God,
trusting Him to lead and to guide you
through each season of your life.
