Convention 2018-2019 for the 143rd International Theosophical
Convention held at Adyar, Chennai from 31st December 2018 to 5th

Message was to
assimilate Eternal Truth from Theosophical Teachings and to exemplify the
teachings in life, as only examples can teach. This was followed by sharing of
observations by Brethren.
On 2nd January 2019 the Mystic Star Ritual was performed. The Five Pointed Mystic Star represents the principal
aspects of Power, Wisdom, Joy, Beauty and Love with its reflex professions
Judge, Scientist, Servant, Craftsman and Healer to symbolize that every righteous
profession is an avenue to work in life for the Divine. The Ritual conveys the
essence of the teachings of all Religions and ends with invocation to Him
written by Dr. Annie Besant in 1911. It was a beautiful uplifting ceremony.
The Cultural Evening on 4th
January 2019
The evening was
opened with the Universal Prayer and
Mystic Star Ritual Processional Hymn “Gather us in, Thou Love that fillest
all” with Sis. Freny Paghdiwala on
Piano.
Sis. Aban Patel, Master of Ceremony, explaining the
Theme of this year’s 143rd International Convention “Truth and Beauty: A Field Beyond” said:
When we speak about Truth,
there are two concepts that pop up in our minds or thoughts. The 1st
one is “Satyamev Jayate” meaning Truth alone triumphs. This is a
mantra from the ancient Indian scripture Mundaka Upanishad. Upon Independence
of India, it was adopted as the National motto of India and it is inscribed at
the base of the National emblem which is Ashoka Chakra.
Another mantra
that comes up in our mind is our own Theosophical Society’s motto surrounding
the emblem of Theosophical Society. i.e. “There is no religion Higher than Truth”.
Now what is Beauty? The
dictionary meaning of Beauty is quality of being attractive, pleasing, charming
etc. But these are apparent to our eyes.Beauty should not be skin deep. It must
have a deepermeaning, as beauty of thoughts, ideas, concepts that appeal to the
senses of inner being. Beauty has been traditionally counted among the ultimate
values with Goodness, Truth and Justice. Aristotle has said “The good and the
beautiful are the beginning both of knowledge and the movement of things”.
And what is Truth? The
dictionary meaning of Truth is: True facts, genuine depiction, statement of
reality, correctness, accuracy, that which is real & genuine. But this
Truth goes much beyond as it is in “Satyam Shivam, Sundaram”. What does it
imply? Satyam i.e. Truth which never undergoes any change what so ever as it is
connected with Shivam-Godliness or Eternal Soul. Along with these two words
comes Sundaram- beauty of Soul. These three words describe the nature of the
self – Truth, Tranquility and Innocence and Spiritual Beauty. When all three meet we have as the Bollywood
movie song says: ‘Ishwar Satya Hai; Satya hi Shiv Hai; Shiv hi Sundaram hai.’
Sis. Aban Patel as MC lucidly stringed together beauty
of songs, inspiring talk, Christmas Music,
Magic-Tricks and Line Dance by talented Brethren of Blavatsky Lodge:
·
Sis.
Aban Amroliwalla narrated inspiring Life of Saint Meerabai
depicting her devotion and mystical love for Lord Krishna despite harassment by
Jadi Rana and the Bhajans she had sung with devotion for Lord Krishna.
·
Sis.
Ketayun Irani and Bro. Berthram Redwood sang ‘Give me a
moment in time…’, recreating sentiments of this prize winning song of a
competition in London.

jubilantly sang Carols starting with ‘It’s a Small World After all’.
· Our Guest artists Former Director of Police Mr.
Tukaram Chaudhari and his wife Rajeshwari Chaudhari sang a duet ‘Dile betab
sinese lagana hoga’. Mrs. Rajeshwari Chaudhari also sang a Gazal ‘Aaj jane ki
jeed n kare’. It was a treat to hear them sing.
· Bro. Roy Mathew rendered a Christmas Song ‘Oh!
Holy Night’, which had a request for a encore
· Highlight of the evening was the Line
Dance
performed with popular song ‘Havana
ooh-na-na, half of my heart is in Havana, ooh na-na’. This song was
originally sung by a Teenager Camilla Carbello, a Cuban-Mexican immigrant to
USA telling about her heart break on leaving her love back in Havana. The dance, choreographed by graceful Sis. Zeena
Rastomji was performed by her and talented Brethren Kashmira Khambatta,
Jasmine Cawasji, Ketu Irani, Ruby Khan, Navaz Dhalla, Aban Amroliwalla, Mahtab
Tarapore, Navin Kumar, Arni Narendran & Berthram Redwood.
· The Finale was Sis. Jesmine Cawasji and
other Blavatsky
Lodge Members singing Spanish Song ‘Feliz
Navidad’ to say ‘I wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my Heart’.
· Sis. Mahazaver Dalal thanked all
the talented artistes for heralding New Year 2019 with enriching entertainment.
Closing
Day of the Support Convention
5th
January 2019 Symposium on ‘Mantras’
VEDIC
MANTRAS
Bro. Navin Kumar tracing the evolution of Mantras through various Vedas stated that mantras can be said to be sacred
thoughts of prayer or invocation, expressed in words and repeated aloud or
silently repetitively in prayers or meditation.
Bro. Navin Kumar recited the Gayatri Mantra:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
Om the physical, Om the astral and Om the Mental, we meditate upon
the divine light of that adorable sun of spiritual consciousness which
stimulates our power of Spiritual Perception i.e. which enlightens our Buddhi. This mantra is said to be the Mantra of the Fifth Root Race as in
this race the Human Kingdom is learning to use its consciousness at the level
of Buddhi
after having acquired a good capability up to the Mental Plane.
He recited some
of his favorite shlokas from the
Bhagwad Geeta where Lord Krishna has given his sermon to Arjuna:
यदायदाहिधर्मस्यग्लानिर्भवतिभारत।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्यतदाऽऽत्मानंसृजाम्यहम्।।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्यतदाऽऽत्मानंसृजाम्यहम्।।
परित्राणायसाधूनांविनाशायचदुष्कृताम्।
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थायसंभवामियुगेयुगे।।
Whenever there is decay of righteousness O Bharata! And
exaltation of un-righteousness, then I incarnate myself in some form. For
protection of the good and destruction of evil doers, for the sake of firmly
establishing righteousness, I am born from age to age.
वासांसिजीर्णानियथाविहाय
वानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा
न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही।।
As a man, casting off worn out garments, taketh new ones, so the
dweller in the body, casting off worn out bodies, entereth into others that are
new.
प्रजहाति यदा कामान् सर्वान् पार्थ
मनोगतान्।
आत्मन्येवात्मना तुष्टः
स्थितप्रज्ञस्तदोच्यते।।
When
a man abandoneth O Parth! All desires of the heart, and is satisfied in Self by
Self, then he is called stable in mind ie established In Buddhi.
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि।।
Thy
business is with action only, never with its fruits; so let not fruit of action
be thy motive, nor be thou to inaction attached.
Bro Navin Kumar further stated that when such
mantras are memorized and chanted daily they give strength to the chanter for
facing the ups and downs in this journey of life.
Sis. Shernaz Vatchha spoke
about ‘Yoga Sutras’ with explanations and recited ‘Aum’,
about which she had given explanation at an earlier meeting.
Sis. Jasmine Cawasji
recited shloka ‘Asato ma Sadagamya,
Tamaso ma
Jyotirgamya, Mrtiyormaamrutum gmaya’.
MANTHRAWANI (Zoroastrian Mantras)
Any Mantra Recital is a direct
dedication to a Divinity which has the alchemic strength to pour forth Its
power, whenever invoked or evoked upon, to work with a direction. The Thought
Force (Mithra) along with the (Mantra) recital has the
capacity of bringing down the very Highest of the Divine & Celestial
Beings, so a good amount of Seriousness of Mind and a true Spirit of Dedication
to the Soul within is of great importance and of course most necessary. – Explanation given by Bro. Keki Palkhiwalla.
Manthrawani recited in this session are as under:
Sis. Aban Amroliwalla – ‘Ahnuvar’ – ‘Yatha Ahuvairyo’ which is the first Manthrawani like ‘Aum’. It conveys:
Just as God is to
be admired,
so the
prophet on account of his righteousness;
The
benefit of good mind is for those who work in the world
in the
name of God, i.e. selflessly;
That
man develops the moral courage of Ahura,
who helps the poor
fellow beings.
Sis. Ruby Khan – ‘Ashem
Vohu’:
Purity is good. It
is the best. It is happiness.
Happiness to whom,
who is pure for the sake of best purity.
And ‘Yenghe
hatam’:
We praise those
men and women from amongst the living,
Whose
actions are good and
whose goodness is
judged by righteous Ahuramazda
Sis. Mahtab Tarapore –Five
Gehs(for 5 parts of day), i.e.Ushahen,
Havan, Rapithvan, Uziran & Aiwisruthrem with esoteric explanation
given by Late Sis. Nergish
Nusserwanji. The Gehs denote the stages the human soul
has to go through to reach the highest level of consciousness beginning with
the UshahenGeh, when the soul
has just awakened, through Havan, Rapithvan, Uziran Gehs to reach
finally the
AiwisruthremGeh when
it is ready to become one with the Supreme Consciousness.
Sis. Kashmira Khambatta –
(1)‘Ya Harvesp Twan-O Harvesp Agah- O harvesp
Khuda’
Ominipotent – Omnipresent – Omniscient
Strength of mind & body be acquired.
Wisdom of God be mine to know & Practice.
Divine invisible help be bestowed upon me
(2)’OOS moi Uzareshwar, Ahuramazda’
Oh Ahura Mazda Clean and purify my mind & bodies
(3)
‘Chithra moi Dam Ahoombish Ratum Chizdi’
Clearly reveal unto me a wise Divine Teacher
Sis. Aban Patel recited & Sis. Mahazaver Dalal
explained –
(1) Karda (Stanza) 6 from‘Ardibahesht
Yasht’ regarding healing by Purity, Justice, Surgery, Medicines from
Plants and best of all by Prayers – Manthrawani
(2) Karda (stanza) 11 of
Haftan Yasht known as ‘Yatu zi Zarathushtra’ for
protection against ill and dispelling un-righteousness from Body & Mind.
Dr. Darius H. Umrigar
explained how the prayers guide & energize every action of thoughts, words
& deeds as the day advances. They develop ‘Loving Mind’ attribute of Bahmen
Ameshaspand. Prayers cleanse & purify soul and create righteous Karma.
Negative vibrations coming out of one are filtered. Healing is done by Chakras
absorbing Manthrawani. Colours absorb Manthrawani, e.g. on Thursday, the day of
Jupiter Planet, which is the Planet of Zoroastrian Religion, it is good to wear
Blue colour. Technology has increased, but one has to be in tune with Harmony
of Nature.
Dr. Parvin Surti said
different religions are stages. There is no One Religion and so to understand
essence of all religions there is Theosophy. The characters of different Epics
of East & West are to teach humanity. God is perfection, bad is complete
imperfection. There is a Free Will, so according to the decision of physical
brain Karmas good or bad are created. So walk into consciousness.
Zoroastrianism is the religion of Planet Jupiter, which is for Ashoi – Righteousness. A Human’s
vibrations are according to his religion so Zoroastrianism wants each to follow
his own religion.
The Support Convention was
closed with recitation of a Sanskrit Universal Prayer.
DEVOTION

You may be few in numbers,
But spiritual strength and power depend
Not upon numbers, Rather do
They depend upon burning sincerity.

THE
TOS COLLOQUIUM - EDUCATIONAL TRAINING CAMP
By
Sis.Thrity Dalal, Vice-President TOS Mumbai
The
TOS Mumbai Region held its Annual Colloquium at Deolali at the Leslie Sawhney
Centre Deolali from 7th to 11th November 2018 in which 57
delegates from Mumbai plus nearly a dozen members and sympathisers from the
Nasik region participated in the deliberations. The participants included children as young as six years old, sent by
their parents to learn to live independently, and senior delegates, the eldest
being 85 years old, who lived harmoniously during the five days spent together
amidst the tranquil environs of the Centre
in Deolali. The Theme of the colloquium was “The secret of happiness is not
found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less”.
Gaiety
amongst delegates, delight in discovering each other’s potential, and relief to
be away from the fast paced city life was the experience of most participants
whilst dwelling on the theme. This year the presence of Late Bro. Rusi
Toddywalla was greatly missed.
The
various activities at the Colloquium are enumerated below:
Healing Group Ritual was performed on
7th November 2018.
Collectively invoking benevolent forces through the Ritual, the
delegates created a conducive environment to radiate thoughts of love, peace
and strength to those in pain and distress.
The
Colloquium was inaugurated on 8.11.2018 by the Chief Guest Maj. Gen. Cyrus
Pithawalla (Retd). He reminded the delegates
“I am because we are” - urging
those present to develop the quality of unity and rendering social service as
an act of Sanatan Dharma or duty for it
is in sharing that we receive. The gaps in our fingers are meant to extend a
grip or support to others in need. More
than the receiver, it is the giver who should feel blessed for being offered an
opportunity to help.Sis. Parinaz Gandhi, President of the T.O.S. Mumbai
Region stated that what we get can fetch
us temporary enjoyment but what we give would bring us permanent happiness,
reminding those present that the greatest
wealth we can acquire is contentment. Even a simple hollow piece of wood
like a flute can create divine music for those who know how to derive happiness
from it.The Guest of Honour, Cmde. Aspi Marker (Retd) remarked that If we focus our energies on the essentials
rather than the extraneous factors, we would be more fruitful. Whilst it is
good to be efficient, it is better to be effective. If we are able to enhance
our usefulness to others whilst depending on minimal resources, we could play a
more meaningful role.
The
theme of the colloquium was the subject of the SYMPOSIUM in which 14 delegates
participated. The salient thoughts they shared: Happiness is given by God but
we don’t know how to experience it. It can be found within us. There is a
constant conflict to seek enjoyment. We should cherish the precious gift of
life given to us. Inner fulfillment
brings happiness and little deeds of kindness to those in distress bring
greater happiness. We need to
discipline the mind. Regeneration of the mind is required every moment. Restful
sleep can be enjoyed irrespective of whether we reside in a hut, a cottage, a
flat or a big palace. We need to work hard with zero expectations. The quest to
acquire more is only to post the accomplishment on social media. We should share our possessions by helping
the unfortunate with compassion. We forget to value what we have and don’t
know what we want. Whilst competition can
help us to improve, we have to remind
ourselves not to compare or be jealous. Enjoyment is temporary but happiness is
durable like time shared with loved ones, the beauty of nature, the fragrance
of fresh earth after the first rains. We should learn to enjoy everything, even
pain.
YOUTH DISCUSSION was held with the
topic “No one is your friend or foe, all
alike are your teachers” when 18
young delegates participated. Salient points emerging from the discussion were
: We can change our life by changing our
attitude. We learn when we move out of our comfort zone. Stop, look, listen
– keep your eyes and ears open so that
you don’t miss any signs or guidance. We can learn from everyone, even a child
or an uneducated person. People come into our lives for a purpose. We have
to take an interest in others and learn from everyone. Don’t judge people. We mistakenly think that those who praise us are
our friends and those who give well-meaning advice are our enemies. Our
so-called foes help to improve us. We should be receptive, retain whatever
criticism is necessary for our improvement and let go of the rest. Learn from
Nature and every experience at every opportunity. The journey of learning never
stops. If we don’t learn from mistakes, we will keep repeating them. We must
try till we succeed and face whatever life brings us. Whilst seeking success we should be prepared for failure. Harbour love
and goodwill towards your critics. Believe in yourself.
DELEGATES’ ART EVENING was held on
the last day when the delegates and students and friends of Vikas Mandir
harmonized their talents to entertain the audience.
SOCIAL WELFARE WORK: A trip to the Vikas Mandir School for the
Disabled was an eye-opener for young and old delegates who take their physical
and mental faculties for granted.
Besides regular assemblies, prayers
and devotional songs, * Yoga sessions on two
occasions and an opportunity to ‘Go
green’ by having the gardeners at Leslie Sawhny Centre widen knowledge of
the beauty of nature witnessed at the Leslie Sawhny Centre. Indoor and outdoor
games promoted fraternization among the delegates. They also visited the
shrines of Sai Baba in Shirdi, Khandoba Mandir in Deolali and Mukti Dham in
Nashik to recharge their spiritual batteries.
An hour was spent on the last morning
to give the delegates an opportunity to
express their views on the colloquium. The young leaders of the seven groups
were invited to share their views when they expressed the confidence they have
gained at the Colloquiums over the years and the opportunity to interact with
their Group members. It was good to see the delegates nurture and take care of
each other. Whilst punctuality is stressed at all sessions, some delegates need
to take it more seriously. Rules laid down should be respected by all with self
discipline, especially by the elders who should set an example. The Youth
Discussion should be more interactive with limited reading of speeches by
participants.
IMPORTANT FINDINGS:
1.
Just as we consult a doctor in
times of illness, through prayers and devotional songs we can appeal to God for
His blessings.
2.
What we get can fetch us temporary
enjoyment but what we give would bring us permanent happiness. The greatest
wealth we can acquire is contentment.
3. More than the receiver, it is the giver who should feel blessed for
being offered an opportunity to help.
4. The gaps in our fingers are meant to extend a grip or support to
others in need.
5. If we focus our energies on the essentials rather than the
extraneous factors, we would be more fruitful.
6. There are some individuals who are happy if their bare needs are met
by minimal work whilst there are others who continually seek greener pastures
in the hope that they will derive greater satisfaction later.
7. In this increasingly materialistic world our wants keep on
increasing but we have to train our mind to find satisfaction and happiness in
small things.
8. Inner fulfillment brings happiness and little deeds of kindness to
those in distress bring greater happiness.
9. We should share our possessions by helping the unfortunate with
compassion.
10. Whilst competition can help us to improve, we have to remind ourselves
not to compare or be jealous.
11. Whether we are pointing out mistakes to others or others find faults
with us, we should always turn the exercise into a learning experience.
12. We can change our life by changing our attitude.
13. Don’t judge people. We mistakenly think that those who praise us are
our friends and those who give well-meaning advice are our enemies.
14. Just as difficulties in life always have a lesson for us, we have to
learn to say thank you to our so-called enemies for giving us an opportunity to
improve.
15. Keep your eyes and ears open so that you don’t miss any Divine
signal or guidance.
16. We should be thankful to God and be content with what He has given
us.
17. If we accept every verdict of the Almighty gracefully and share
whatever we have with the less privileged we will always remain happy.
18. Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold, happiness
dwells in the soul.
19. There is enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s
greed.
20. ‘More’, once attained, gives brief pleasure but eventually becomes a
burden.
21. As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own
lives and our own happiness.

LET US LOOK TOGETHER WHAT ADYAR MEEANS TO US
Dr. Atul Bhatnagar’s talk At Indian Section HQ, Varanasi
It is a place of
unsurpassable natural beauty. A place for myriad sentient beings, wild and
domesticated living in harmony amongst the salubrious environs. A place where
the 450 years old Banyan Tree stands tall and witness to the benevolent actions
of Mahatmas, sages and mere mortals. A place situated on south bank of river
Adyar ….shallow yet silent …. shy yet steady in its pace. A place at the
confluence of a river and a sea. A river signifies a soul’s journey. The deep
sea is deep, rhythmically humming the sound of Pranav. The sea signifies the absolute consciousness and the waves
the divine Spandan … whole of
creation appearing as bubbles on his canvas of absolute consciousness. A place
where structures of human thought, wisdom and devotion are located ….merging
their voices along with songs of birds big and small, into the Voice of the
Silence. Adyar, a place which nourishes and houses International Head Quarters
of the Theosophical Society, what used to be Huddleston Gardens is now living,
throbbing, caring and loving embodiment of primordial Splendour and Energy.
Innumerable humans have felt this and found solace in its folds. The visitors
and indwellers alike feel connected to Silence and vigorating Energy. They feel
a part of It and It be in them – ‘Sarvam Sarvaatmakum! All is in
All… When one observes keenly with a learning mind, one sees the
reality …. All is in All… We get connected to that eternal flow of immense
peaceful creative energy. We get reconnected and tuned to the Voice of the
Silence … we get connected to Adyar … Adyar resides in us …. always.
