BLAVATSKY LODGE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ON SUNDAY 30TH
SEPTEMBER 2018
**************************************
BTF PRESIDENT BRO. VINAYAK PANDYA’S
MEMORIES OF GENERAL COUNCIL
MEETING
FOR STRATAGIC PLANNING
AT INTERNATIONAL THEOSOPHICAL
CENTER
AT NAARDEN IN NETHERLAND
FROM 01 JULY TO 05 JULY
2018
Shared with BTF Members at
Blavatsky Lodge TS
on 13th July 2018
Ever
since Mr. Tim Boyd has taken over responsibilities of International
Presidentship of Theosophical Society (TS), he has been making every attempt to
strengthen TS. As part of this it has been decided to have General Council (GC)
Meetings twice in a year. TS has wonderful centers at many places. One of this
is International Theosophical Centre (ITC) at Naarden in Netherlands. This
wonderful centre is on 15 acres of lush green land with Besant Hall, Crystal
House, Crystal Hall, Arundel House, Michal House, Garden of Remembrance,
Catholic Church, Cottages, Round Table and other facilities. GC meeting was
held here for strategic planning of TS. Many GC members along with invitees
were present at the meeting.
Mr.
Tim Boyd presided over the meetings. President welcomed every one and Meeting
began with silence & invoking Masters to guide the TS. The purpose of the
meeting was to critically evaluate what we have been doing? What is to be done?
And make the TS more effective in future.
Theosophical Publishing
House:
Mr.Marcos
de Resende of Brazil presented paper on Theosophical Publishing House (TPH).
TPH role was discussed in detail. There is a change in people’s reading habits.
Day by day people prefer to read e-books. E-books are cheaper for publishing.
They have inherent threat of being copied. It does not involve inventory cost,
space and dead investments. There are e-stores like Amazon who sell e-books. TS
should take advantage of the same. There should be broader coordination between
publishing activities in same language. There may be slow moving books, which
may not be commercially viable but important for spiritual seekers and should
be published by TPH- may be as e-book. Ponder upon new ideas and apply your
minds jointly. There is no hurry in deciding any matters.
Books / Literature for
introduction:
This
matter was discussed extensively. When a new enquirer comes what should we
present him. It was felt that certain soft literature should be prepared for
introduction of TS. It can be books, leaflets, pamphlets, e-books etc. There is
difference of opinion between H P Blavetsky and Dr Besant’s & Leadbeater’s
views. New members should not be put in confusion. It was decided that new
materials will be prepared which will be in conformity with mission statement
and objects of TS.
Mission Statement of TS:
Mr.
Arend, Chairman of ITC presented his views on strategic planning of TS. He
welcomed all GC members at ITC. One of the important characteristics of the TS
Adyar is that it is a learning organisation. It encourages self-transformation
instead of just repeating the past, which may easily result in a “sandbank of
thought”. TS Adyar has proven to be able to learn and adjust according to the
requirements of the time. The fast changing environment of today demands new
and fresh ideas as its way of expressing the Ancient Wisdom.
Draft
mission statements were discussed extensively. It was finally concluded that
following will be
The Theosophical
Society’s Mission Statement:
”To serve humanity by cultivating an ever deepening understanding
and realization of the Ageless Wisdom, spiritual self- transformation and the
unity of all life.”
It
was decided that other Sections and Federations will translate it in their
regional language giving the same meaning.
Theosophical Schools:
Mr Vicente Hao Chin, Jr (Vic) of
Philippines presented paper on need for Theosophical Schools. Education has
been considered as one of the most important work directions of the
Theosophical Society since the time of H. P. Blavatsky and H. S. Olcott.
In the ‘Key to Theosophy’,
Madam H. P. Blavatsky wrote:
“If
we had money, we would found schools which would turn out something else than
reading and writing. Children should
above all be taught self-reliance, love for all men, altruism, mutual charity
and more than anything else, to think and reason for themselves. We would
reduce the purely mechanical work of the memory to an absolute minimum and
devote the time to the development and training of the inner senses, faculties
and latent capacities. We would endeavour to deal with each child as a unit,
and to educate it so as to produce the most harmonious and equal unfoldment of
its powers, in order that its special aptitudes should find their full natural
development. We should aim at creating free men and women, free intellectually,
free morally, unprejudiced in all respects, and above all things, unselfish.
And we believe that much if not all of this could be
obtained by proper and truly
theosophical education. (Key, Sect. 13)
Olcott, on the other hand, established more than 200 Buddhist
schools in Sri Lanka in order to counteract the
attempt of Christian schools to dominate the culture of the country. He
eventually turned over all these schools to the government of Sri Lanka. As a
result, Sri Lanka has retained its Buddhist culture and Olcott is considered by
the country as a national hero.
Annie Besant established or inspired the establishment of
theosophical schools not only in India but in many other countries in the world
- England, Scotland, United States, Australia, New
Zealand and China. But by the 1970s, only one school was left that was being
run by the Theosophical Society. This was the Olcott Memorial School, which was
a charity school and did not have the core components of a theosophical school.
Six schools under the Besant Educational Fellowship in India are being run
autonomously and were not under the TS in India. The Theosophical Order of
Service in India has established or supported several charity schools, but do
not have a clear theosophical philosophy in the way they are run.
In about 1986, the Philippine section started its first Kindergarten
School at its National Headquarters. Later, it
started two other schools, the second of which became Golden Link College
because in addition to kindergarten, primary and
secondary classes, it started a
college in 2009 for teacher education and other courses. Today, there are four
schools directly under Golden Link College (GLC), and two schools that are
affiliated with GLC and which follows the GLC curriculum and philosophy.
VIC
emphasized that it is extremely difficult to put theosophical ideas in a person
after a certain age. It is easier if children are given TS ideology at their
tender age. GLC has training facilities for teachers. Teachers have to be
trained first that they can understand & teach to students.
Students should be inculcated with ideas of brotherhood, compassionate
self-development, no-competition, human values, truth, trust, consciousness
about duties, awareness, avoiding discrimination. VIC says we should
have target of 100 schools in next 50 years. It was concluded that from June
2019 one school will start functioning at Adyar. Premises will be given by TS.
It may be at existing TPH or Damodar Gardens. President Mr. Tim Boyd said that
donation of US$ 25,000 to 30,000 has been promised to him for new school at
Adyar. Other Sections should be encouraged to start school or kindergarten or
child care centers.
Meditation Courses:
VIC described various meditation
methods. It was exhaustively discussed that TS should recommend & practice
meditation. At present it is left to members to follow whichever meditation
they want to do. It was decided to find out what has been followed in various
TS centers.
Theosophy World:
Mr Richards & John from New
Zeland explained Theosophical World. An exhaustive work is done on Theosophy
World. Most of the TS literature is available on this site. Members / anyone
can visit this site & get knowledge on TS. It was discussed how to utilize
fully the efforts made in New Zealand for TS at large.
National Lodge in USA & E-Lodge concept:
In
USA many members are unattached. Even in Indian Section concept of unattached
members is existing. In USA National Lodge sends materials on e-mails. Members
reply & resolve their enquiries on e-mails. In present day many members
find difficult to attend lodge meetings regularly at regular time & place.
Bombay Theosophical Federation President proposed that they want to convert
their Jyoti Lodge into E-Lodge. Members expressed enthusiasm for the concept.
Members conveyed their best wishes for this trial E-Lodge concept. Once this is
implemented its experience will be shared amongst others. In e-lodge meetings
will be held & recording will be done. This may be put on U Tube or
Theosophy World or any other website. Members can log on & participate at
anytime from anywhere. This will solve multiple problems and overcome
attendance problem in lodge meeting. Indian Section is strict in granting
ordinary and /or life membership to those who are not regular in attending
meetings. E-Lodge will help members to participate at their convenient time.
Damodar Gardens:
President Mr. Tim Boyd informed the
members that Krishnamurty Foundation of India (KFI) have vacated the Damodar
Gardens (DG) on 30 May 2018. Now it is with TS to utilise and protect. Heavy
security expenses have to be incurred. There are chances that unauthorised
persons may get into DG. TS has received an offer from TVS Education Society
(TVSES) to start international school at the said premises. TVSES are offering
Rs.4 lakhs licence fees per month with increase of 5% after every 7 years.
TVSES wants this for 40 years with further extension of 20 years. It was
decided that this offer is too low. It was decided to give 7 acres on the north
side. It was decided that licence fees will be increased every year based on
Government of India Inflation index. It was discussed that the said premises
can only be utilised for Education, Humanitarian & Philosophical work.
Period of licence should be 30 years plus further extension of 20 years.
Present KFI school premises may be used for a new proposed ICSC school at
Adyar.
Theosophical Centers around the world:
Mr.
Minor Lile presented paper on TS centers around the world. It was decided to
make TS Centers more sustainable and effective for the work of TS. It was
discussed how to generate more revenues for TS properties around the world.
Indian Section has properties at Varanasi & Bhuwali. Indian Section
encourages lodges, federation & other Sections to conduct study camp at
beautiful Himalayan Study Centre in Bhuwali. Bhuwali can accommodate 50 persons.
Varanasi can accommodate 125 persons.
Best Practices in the TS World:
Mr. Ingamar of ITC presented his
views on best practices in TS world. It was discussed how better co-ordination
amongst all centres around the world can be achieved. Various Sections should
share ideas amongst each other. Mail data of various Sections can be used. It
is observed that many Sections have their websites. Web information should be
shared. Duplication of work should be avoided.
TS should use social media to spread the knowledge of TS.
International Speakers’(IS) List:
It was decided that after exhaustive
scrutiny and brain storming TS Adyar will prepare International Speakers list.
Expenses for IS should be born generally by the Section inviting the speaker.
In case of difficulty Adyar may bear some travelling expenses on case to case
basis.
Self-Transformation Seminars:
Mr Vicente Hao Chin, Jr presented
paper on self-transformation seminars. It was decided that TS should conduct
self transformation seminars. It was decided
to have co-ordination amongst various centers conducting self-transformation
seminars. There should not be any contradiction in such seminars.
Objects of TS:
Marcos presented paper on making
changes in the objects of TS. It was decided that members will sleep over the
ideas & in future it will be deliberated.
TS Youth Exchange Program:
Mr. Pradeep Gohil presented paper on
TS Youth exchange programs. He emphasised that youth between the age 16 to 19
years can go on this program. Duration may be 2 months or 1 year. In this
program youth from one country will go to another country. They will be
provided free accommodation & hospitality by TS members in their home. They
may study in another country for a year. Travel expenses should be borne by TS
Adyar. Initially US$10,000/- may be spared by TS Adyar. This will help a lot in
cultivating seeds of TS culture amongst the youths.
Animal Rights Manifesto and Domesticated Animals:
Mr.Nimbex Green presented paper on
Animal Rights. It was emphasised that many TS members are vegetarian. More
& more people in the world are moving towards vegetarianism. It was
discussed that animals also have right to live and love. If this message is
spread it will help a lot.
Developing Techniques for opening new lodges:
Mr.Ricardo Lindermann presented paper on formation of
new lodges. He shared his experience in Brazil. He informed that they select
various topics, speakers and conduct meetings with non members regularly. Once
this is done from this new groups emerge
& lodges are formed.
TS World Congress in Singapore from 4 to 8 August 2018:
It was decided to encourage members
to attend World congress at Singapore.
International Youth Convention from 27 to 29 December 2018 (3 days)
at Adyar:
It was decided that International Youth
Convention will be held from 27 to 29 December 2018 at Adyar. It will be for
the age group up to 45 years. Theme will be “Yogic Life Through Bhakti Yoga,
Gyan Yoga and Karma Yoga” Cost per participant will be Rs.2,000- including lodging boarding.
International Convention from 31 Dec 2018 to 05 Jan 2019:
TS International Convention will be
held at Adyar from 31 December 2018 to 05 January 2019. Theme of the convention
will be “TRUTH AND BEAUTY: A
FIELD BEYOND”. All members are requested to attend the
same. If it may not be possible for them to attend, in such cases they should
send their registration without physically attending. This will create link in
Convention work, it will have contribution for Master’s work. There are many
changes taking place at International Convention. Now daily live telecast is
available. Bus service is provided for delegates. Water purifying is done.
Additional Toilets are provided. Blavatsky Bungalow is under renovation. It is
expected that it will get renovated before Convention.
Overall it was a meeting with
wonderful deliberations, brain storming at Naarden. Next meeting at Naarden will be from 28 June 2019 to 01 July 2019. GC
members are expected to arrive one day before on 27 June 2019 & leave on 02
July 2019.

DAILY
MEDITATION
AT
THE FEET OF THE MASTER
by Sis. Thrity Dalal
MONTHLY PRACTICE
AUGUST
SUBJECT: CONDUCT
PRACTICE: SELF CONTROL
·
WEEKLY
PRACTICE-
whatever you are doing, fix your thought upon it
·
WEEKLY
PRACTICE-
stop often to think
·
WEEKLY PRACTICE- you must
control your thought – do not let it wander
·
WEEKLY PRACTICE- Think each day of someone in need of help and pour
out loving thought upon him
1. Qualification of “Self-control as to
the mind” shows the mental body must be controlled
2. Whatever you are doing, fix your
thought upon it, that it may be perfectly done
3. Control the mind, so that the thought
may always be calm and unruffled
4. You are not this mind, but it is yours
to use
5. Never allow yourself to feel sad or
depressed. If ever depression comes to you, throw it off at once
6. If your thought is what it should be,
you will have little trouble with your action
7. You must never…. Think what you cannot
imagine the Master as …. Thinking
8. You must control your thought; you must
not let it wander
9. Stop often to think: “What would the
Master think about this?”
10. You must learn to be true all through….
In thought first
11. There are in the world many untrue
thoughts, many foolish superstitions, and no one who is enslaved by them can
make progress
12. You must not hold a thought just because
many other people hold it, nor because it has been believed for centuries, nor
because it is written in some book which men think sacred
13. You must think of the matter yourself,
and judge for yourself whether it is reasonable. Remember that though a
thousand men agree upon a subject, if they know nothing about that subject
their opinion is of no use
14. He who would walk upon the Path must
learn to think for himself
15. Superstition is one of the greatest evils
in the world, one of the fetters from which you must utterly free yourself
16. You must not think of them what you do
not know
17. Do not suppose that others are always
thinking of you
18. If a man does something which you think
will harm you….. do not think at once “He meant to injure me.”
19. Each soul has its own troubles and its
thoughts turn chiefly around itself
20. If a man speak angrily to you, do not
think “He hates me, he wishes to wound me.”….. He is acting foolishly, for all
anger is foolish, but you must not therefore think untruly of him
21. Gossip begins with evil thought, and that
itself is a crime. For in everyone and in everything there is good and evil.
Either of these we can strengthen by thinking of it, and in this way we can
help or hinder evolution; we can do the will of the Logos or we can resist Him
22. Your wicked thought tempts your brother
to do wrong, for if he is not yet perfect you may make him that which you have
thought him
23. Use your thought power every day for good
purpose; be a force in the direction of evolution
24. If you think of the evil in another, you
are doing at the same time three wicked things: filling your neighborhood, your
brother and your own mind with evil thought instead of with good thought, and
so you are adding to the sorrow of the world
25. Avoid incessant worry over little things
in which many people spend most of their time
26. So much suffering is caused just by
carelessness – by forgetting to think how an action will affect others….
27. Your mental body wishes to think itself
proudly separate, to think much of itself and little of others
28. You must learn that no ceremonies are
necessary ; else you will think yourself somehow better than those who do not
perform
29. When your body wishes something, stop and
think whether you really wish it. For you are God
30. Do not let your mind be idle, but keep
good thoughts always in the background of it, ready to come forward the moment
it is free.
31. Hold back your mind from pride, for pride
comes only from ignorance. The man who does not know thinks that he is great,
that he has done this and that great thing; the wise man knows that only God is
great, that all good work is done by God alone.
