Rightness of Living

“Rightness in living is not so much a question of goals, of rules, of discipline, as of becoming aware, to some extent at least, of the very nature of existence. This may be why one of the Elder Brethren said that Theosophy is the study of the relationship between the mortal and the immortal, the finite and the infinite, the transitory and the eternal.”

ASALA PURNIMA MEETING at Blavatsky Lodge on 27th July 2018: In Green Room near Lord Buddha’s statue a Table was prepared by Sis. Kashmira Khambatta and Sis. Nawaz Dhala, Sis. Asha had done special Rangoli underneath the table. The meeting was opened with recitation of Buddhist Prayer. Blavatsky Lodge President Sis. Kashmira Khambatta speaking on the occasion said: Asala Purnima which is celebrated as ‘Guru Purnima’ is a paradoxical term ‘Gu’ means ‘Darkness’ and ‘Ru’ stands for ‘Removal of Darkness’. In heavy monsoon of Ashadh month sky is covered with dark clouds. Ashadhi Purnima of Sukla Paksha  dispels darkness of Krishna Paksha with its bright light. From spiritual Gurus to secular ones, people pay respect to the teachers all over our country. In Nepal it is celebrated as ‘Teacher’s Day’. On this day Lord Buddha, after 5 weeks of attaining illumination under the Bodhi Tree, from Bodh- Gaya went to Sarnath (near Varanasi) and gave his First Sermon to 5 disciples. His teachings are known as ‘The Turning of the Wheel of law’ or ‘The setting in motion of the Royal Chariot Wheels of the Kingdom of Righteousness’.

Sis. Kashmira explained the Ceremony of Asala Poornima which is performed at the moment of Full Moon in the garden of Lord Maitreya’s house, when he recites the sermon in original sonorous Pali, but with the ‘Pentecostal  Miracle’ all present hear it ‘in his own tongue where he was born’. The sermon begins with a proclamation of the Middle Path and leads to recitation of Lord Buddha’s :

Four Noble Truths:

  1. Sorrow is suffering
  2. The Cause of Sorrow
  3. The Ceasing of Sorrow (or the Escape from Sorrow)
  4. The Way which Leads to the Escape of Sorrow - the Noble

Eight Fold Path:

(1)  Right Belief (2) Right Thought  (3) Right Speech

(4) Right Action (5) Right Means of Living (6) Right Exertion (7) Right memory (8) Right Meditation

Dr. Rajam Pillai in her address said: We forget what we do not wish to remember. People like Lala Lajpatrai, Lokmanya Tillak, Annie Besant fought for the cause, but people forget. Dr. Besant’s contribution as the First Woman President of the Indian National Congress was huge. She, a great Intellectual who lived for ‘Satya’ is forgotten. We should think of what Theosophical Society did for India. Dr. Rajam spoke about Alexander-the idol of Greek Culture; Stupa-a place of worship and the books in Sanskrit, Devnagari & Decbhasha, which are forgotten today.

Dr. Rajam added, after winning the battle of Kalinga full of bloodshed, King Ashoka realized what wrong he had done and accepted Lord Buddha’s Teachings of the Middle Path. He spread the Teachings for the multitude of people and even sent his sister Mahinder with a branch of a Boddhi Tree to Sri Lanka to spread Lord Buddha’s Teachings. This was in the BC era.

In 1815 British took over Sri Lanka. In 1857 Madam H. P. Blavatsky & Col. H.S. Olcott established Theosophical Society. In 1879 they came to India. Later both went to Sri Lanka and  took Buddhist Vows of Panch Sheela. Col. HSO established 205 Buddhist Schools and 5 Buddhist Colleges in Sri Lanka. He also worked out a peaceful solution to a fight in Court of two Schools of Buddhism. Dr. Annie Besant in her book on 7 Great Religions has also written on Buddhism. Dr. Rajam ended her talk with reading of English Translation of Prayer ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachhami’.

Bro. Berthram Redwood speaking about Four Refuge said that what lessons we take home depends on our attitude.

The Meeting ended with recitation of Sanskrit Prayer and 10 minute Meditation conducted by Bro. Arni Narendran. In the end Brethren partook water kept in a bowl on the table prepared for the Asala Poornima ceremony.

OBITUARY: Sis. Amy Antia of Blavatsky Lodge with TS Membership of 70 years passed away to Light Eternal on 28th July 2018. She had imbibed Theosophical Values as a young girl observing Theosophical Meetings & Allied Activities in Surat & Bharuch. After her marriage with Dr. Phiroze Antia of Bombay, she transferred her membership to Blavatsky Lodge TS. She was not only dedicated and committed to the Teachings of Theosophy and Zoroastrianism, but was also a source of strength and inspiration for TS, Mystic Star Ritual, Round Table & TOS in Mumbai. She was a very High Degree Co-Freemason of Bombay, Juhu & Surat. In Theosophy her study was deep. She used to urge members for punctuality and say “Masters are there at the appointed time, but if we are not there, They leave.’ She believed in performing ceremony with proficiency and would even at her advanced age prepare herself with reading and practice. She was a member of Blavatsky Lodge Managing Committee. Even after she shifted to Belapur, every Friday evening and First Sunday Morning she would be at Blavatsky Lodge. She was a gentle counselor and a source of encouragement with her smile. May her soul blessed with eternal peace continue its noble work on higher planes.

Sis. Tushna Dallas of Blavatsky Lodge with TS Membership of  26 years passed away to Light Eternal on 13th August 2018. Sis. Tushna had founded The School of Classical Ballet and Western Dance with 4 students in 1966. After five Decades the School under directions of Sis. Tushna and her daughter Khushcheher has grown with students ranging from little girls to performing seniors. Sis. Tushna’s association with Blavatsky Lodge is since 1996. Late Bro. Jalbhai Sanjana used to say Tushna’s students bring vibrancy to the Lodge. When Blavatsky Lodge had major structural repairs, Tushna with Parents of her students had raised a munificent donation for Blavatsky Lodge. May her soul be blessed with celestial beauty & music.

THEOSOPHY AS CULTURAL TRANSLATION

Mediations in the Production of Meaning

 By Bro. Arni Narenran

The Columbia University Global Centre in Mumbai had organized a lecture by Professor Ms Gouri Viswanathan, Director, South Asian Institute, Columbia University , New York. The well attended lecture was an erudite dissertation  from a view point of a cultural Anthropologist on Theosophy - H P Blavatsky and M. K. Gandhi. President Sis. Kashmira Khambatta and Treasurer Bro. Arni Narendran were special invitees to represent the Blavatsky Lodge. The lecture was an analysis in detail decoding the contribution of Madam Blavatsky of exporting Oriental Philosophy and Sanskrit jargons and expressions such as Karma, Maya and the ilk to the West with great finesse and conviction. Also the chance encounter of Mahatma M. K. Gandhi with the Theosophical Society both in London and South Africa and much later with Dr. Annie Besant in India through the self determined pursuit for India’s Freedom. The speaker was convinced that Theosophy had indeed played a great part in Gandhi’s life and Political Thought such as Ahimsa, Vegetarianism and egalitarianism. She did mention in her talk the difference of opinion  between the Mahatma and Dr.Annie Besant although they worked together on the Home Rule initiative. In the post lecture audience participation session, Bro Arni Narendran cleared the air by quoting from an article on Gandhi and Besant which was authored by him and published in the commemorative issue on Annie Besant by FOTA magazine from Greece. He stated that both the leaders were on the same page when seeing the larger picture of Indian Independence. However the divergence was exaggerated both by Gandhians and Historians, the primary issue was on Dr. Besant apprehending the impact on the natives in promoting extreme civil disobedience and Gandhi abhorring Dr. Besant’s hobnobbing with the opulent Maharajas whom the Mahatma felt were squandering the wealth of the Nation. His article was also published by ‘Gandhi Pravah’ a journal published by Mani Bhawan, Gandhi centre, here in Mumbai. The Lodge President extended an invitation to the speaker and organizers to visit the Blavatsky Lodge.

“As the 142nd International Convention is underway at Adyar, Chennai  and as we celebrate the Support Convention here at this historic Blavatsky Lodge in Mumbai,, one begins to wonder if the Society would have ever existed had Madam Blavatsky succeeded in founding the Magic School, much earlier in her life in Cairo. Over the years the members chose to celebrate a Support Convention in Bombay itself, an event housed at the Blavatsky Lodge and convened by the BTF.

Thanks to Sis. Kashmira Khambatta & Bro. Arni Narendran there was screening of International President Tim Boyd’s Presidential Address and his Power Point Report of TS activities around the world. THE GOLDEN STAIRS

A clean life, an open mind,

A pure heart, an eager intellect,

An unveiled spiritual perception,

A brotherliness for all,

A readiness to give and receive advice and instruction,

A loyal sense of duty to the Teacher,

A willing obedience to the behests of TRUTH,

Once we have placed our confidence in,

And believe that Teacher to be in possession of it;

A courageous endurance of personal injustice,

A brave declaration of principles,

A valiant defense of those who are unjustly attacked,

And a constant eye to the ideal of human progression,

And perfection which the secret science depicts—

These are the golden stairs

Up the steps of which the learner may climb

To the Temple of Divine Wisdom.
