HOMAGE TO DR. ANNIE BESANT

1-10-1970

Originally composed in Hindi by

Mugdhaben Hora (Mother of Dr. Ajay Hora

Translated in English by

Ramprasad P. Bakshi, Santacruz, Bombay

Priceless was the moment when

                  I saw that form Divine

That loving smile I caught, I bathed

in the nectar of those eyes

I heard those words affectionate,

                   those precepts of noble life.

Those precepts then inspired me

                   to dedicate my heart,

Here do all the worldly woes

                  subside in peace pristine,

Here pervaded the zest to search

                  the Truth of Life Divine.

In Yogic purity the soul

                   got message sublime,

That Yoga had inspired me

                   to dedicate my heart,

You saw in our land the spark divine

and showed it the true way.

The distinction of mine and thine,

of all else, you wiped away,

In duty wowed to serve mankind

you roamed all night and day,

That vow of duty has urged me

                   to dedicate my heart,

“To love and forbear” your maxim

                   proved your patience vast,

You saw the Cosmic Glory and,

                   cherished a faith steadfast,

With Justice and Equality

                   you the Divine Might invoked,

That Might Divine inspires me

                   to dedicate my heart

To life-long asceticism vowed,

                   you for the poor wept,

The path of Love and Service was

                   your pursuit, and  precept,

A glorious life you lived

                   Immortal grew your fame,

That name Immortal Inspires me

                   to dedicate my heart.
